Keyless Entry: Description and Operation

ILLUMINATED ENTRY
Illuminated entry will be initiated when the customer enters the vehicle by unlocking the doors with the key fob, or with the key or by opening any door. Upon exiting the vehicle, if the lock button is pressed with a door open, illuminated entry will cancel when the door closes. If the vehicle is secure, and a remote keyless entry lock message is received, illuminated entry will cancel. If the doors are closed and the ignition switch is turned on, the illuminated entry also cancels.

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (RKE) (STANDARD EQUIPMENT)
The body control module interfaces with the remote keyless entry receiver module via a one-way serial bus interface. The RKE module is located under the left side of the instrument panel top cover. It does not actuate relays directly but receives the signal from the transmitter and then communicates with the BCM.

Two transmitters are provided with each vehicle, but the RKE module is capable of accommodating four transmitters. The transmitters can be programmed by using the DRB III or the customer can add a transmitter providing a valid previously programmed transmitter exists. This is accomplished by pressing and holding the programmed transmitter unlock button from 4 to 10 seconds and then while still pressing the unlock button, press and release the panic button. This will put the BCM in programming mode. The customer will have approximately 30 seconds to Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) (standard equipment)

A technician with the DRB Ill can reprogram any RKE module providing VTSS is disarmed.

The RKE system, operated by the transmitter, has three modes of operation controlled by three buttons.
- Unlock button: Pressing the unlock button once will unlock the driver's door, disarm VTSS and illuminate the interior lamps. Pressing the unlock button twice within 5 seconds unlocks both doors.
- Lock button: Pressing the lock button locks all doors and sounds the horn once (if horn chirp is enabled).
- Panic button: When the panic button is pressed the horn is pulsed, the headlamps and marker lamps are flashed and the interior lamps are turned on. This will last for up to 3 minutes or until the panic button is pressed again or the ignition is turned on. The panic feature only works when the ignition is in the off position.

*Horn chirp: When all doors are closed and a lock command is sent by the RKE transmitter, a horn chirp will be heard. The horn chirp is also customer programmable by pressing and holding the lock button on the transmitter for 5 seconds and then while still holding the lock button, pressing the unlock button and releasing both. This will toggle (enable/disable) the horn chirp.

INTRODUCTION

The key fob transmitter has three buttons to actuate and program the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system.
- UNLOCK: Pressing the UNLOCK button once will unlock the driver door and activate the illuminated entry system and disarm Vehicle Theft Security System. Pressing the UNLOCK button twice within five seconds will unlock all doors and activate the illuminated entry system.
- LOCK: Pressing the LOCK button locks all doors and sounds horn (chirp) and arm the Vehicle Theft Security System. The chirp verifies the door lock operation.
- PANIC: Pressing the PANIC button sounds the horns at half second intervals, flashes the exterior lamps, and turns ON the interior lamps. The panic alarm will remain on for three minutes, or until the PANIC button is actuated again or the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position.
- The Remote Keyless Entry Module is capable of retaining the transmitter Vehicle Access Code(s) (VAC) in its memory even after vehicle power has been interrupted.

Vehicle Access Code (VAC) Programming
The RKE module is capable of retaining up to four different Vehicle Access Codes. Whenever the vehicle battery power is interrupted the RKE Module will retain all vehicle access codes in its memory. When replacing or adding a key fob transmitter (maximum 4) a functional key fob transmitter is required to program the RKE Module to accept the new Vehicle Access Code. If a functional key fob transmitter is not available, a scan tool (DRB) can be used to program the RKE Module. Refer to the proper Body Diagnostic Procedures for Vehicle Access Code programming procedures using a scan tool.

SYSTEM OPERATION
The Illuminated Entry System is available on vehicles equipped with the Remote Keyless Entry system. The Illuminated Entry System turns ON the courtesy lamps when the remote keyless entry system is activated. The Remote Keyless Entry Module and the Body Controller are used to control the system. Courtesy lamps will turn on for 30 seconds (+/- 1 second) and fade to OFF over a five second period.

The Illuminated Entry System also turns ON the courtesy lamps (and ignition switch lamp) when door is opened. The courtesy lamps will remain ON while the door is open, then fade to OFF 30 seconds (+/- 1 second) after the last door is closed.

The courtesy and ignition switch lamps will fade to OFF immediately when the ignition is switched to ON.

The Illuminated Entry System cannot be activated during the 30 second (+/- 1 second) period after the ignition switch is turned OFF. After a door is opened and closed during this 30 second period, the system will function as previously described.

When the battery voltage has been interrupted to the Illuminated Entry System, the system will not function until the remote keyless entry UNLOCK is actuated.
