Fig. 2 Glow plug wiring schematic (Part 2 of 2). 1982-83 models:
1. If engine cranking speed is slow, turn ignition OFF, then, using a suitable voltmeter, check battery voltage. Voltmeter should indicate approximately 12.4 volts.
2. Using a suitable test lamp and with ignition in RUN position, check voltage at pink wire at fuel injection pump solenoid, Fig. 2. If test lamp remains OFF, repair pink wire. If test lamp lights, turn ignition OFF and check for continuity through fuel solenoid to ground using test lamp KD-125 or equivalent. If there is no continuity, replace fuel injection pump solenoid.
3. With ignition switch in RUN position and engine not operating, check glow plug relay operation. Glow plug should click ON and OFF.
4. If glow plug relay operates as described in step 3, proceed as follows:
a. Turn ignition OFF.
b. Disconnect all glow plug harness connectors from glow plugs.
c. Connect test lamp KD-125 or equivalent between rear post (dark blue and black wires) of glow plug relay and ground.
d. At each glow plug, touch harness connector to glow plug spade terminal. If test lamp lights, glow plug and harness are operating properly. Connect harness connector to glow plugs. Disconnect harness connector after testing each glow plug.
e. If test lamp does not light, touch harness connector to engine block. If test lamp lights, replace glow plug. If test lamp remains OFF, replace wire(s) to glow plug(s).
f. If test lamp remains OFF for each glow plug tested after replacement of wires, replace glow plugs and thermal controller, as required.
5. If glow plug relay does not operate as described in step 3, proceed as follows:
a. If glow plug relay does not click ON and OFF, and ``Wait'' lamp comes ON then OFF, check thermal controller and glow plug relay circuit.
b. Disconnect connector at thermal controller. Connect one end of suitable test lamp to ground and turn ignition to RUN position. Connect other end of test lamp to brown wire and check for voltage. If test lamp lights, check coolant temperature switch. If coolant temperature switch is closed, replace switch.
c. With one end of test lamp grounded, connect other end of test lamp to orange or orange/black wire. If test lamp lights, check for shorted glow plug relay wires (red to dark blue and black wires). Replace damaged wires as required. If test lamp remains OFF after replacement of wires, replace glow plugs and thermal controller as required.
d. Connect one end of test lamp to battery. With other end of test lamp touch yellow wire between thermal controller and glow plug relay. If test lamp remains OFF, repair yellow wire between thermal controller and glow plug relay. If test lamp lights, replace thermal controller.
