Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Drain cooling system and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect accelerator and fuel and vacuum lines at carburetor.
3. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds.
4. Remove bolts attaching alternator bracket to cylinder head.
5. If equipped with power steering or A/C, remove right side front bracket.
6. Disconnect temperature sending unit wiring harness, battery ground cable and radiator and heater hoses.
7. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove spark plugs.
8. Remove rocker cover, then back off rocker arm nuts.
9. Pivot rocker arms to clear pushrods and remove pushrods.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and cylinder head.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Coat cylinder head bolts with sealer. Torque bolts in sequence as shown in Fig. 2. When installing intake and exhaust manifolds, refer to Figs. 3 through 6 for bolt tightening sequence. Note that on 1985 models, all exhaust manifold bolts are torqued to 44 ft. lbs. On 1986 models, bolts 1, 2, 6 and 7 are torqued to 32 ft. lbs. and bolts 3, 4 and 5 are torqued to 37 ft. lbs. On 1985---86 models, torque cylinder head attaching bolts in the following sequence:
a. Torque all bolts in sequence, Fig. 2, to 18 ft. lbs.
b. Torque bolt No. 9 to 29 ft. lbs. and all other bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
c. Tighten bolt No. 9 an additional 90 degrees and all other bolts an additional 120 degrees.
