Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

NOTE: Complete the A/C System Check before completing this test. See System Test. Testing and Inspection

1. Check the HTR-A/C Fuse and the ERLS fuse by visual inspection.

2. Compressor Operation: Turn Ignition Switch to RUN and start engine. Put Mode Selector to OFF then to MAX. A click can be heard when the clutch engages.

^ Move Mode Selector between OFF and MAX several times to verify that clutch engages in MAX position. Clutch plate movement can be seen on the front of the Compressor Pulley.
^ If the clutch does not engage, proceed to Step 4.

3. Put Mode Selector in MAX to engage clutch.

^ Check that engine cooling fan runs when compressor is engaged.

- If cooling fans do not run refer to Cooling System/Testing and Inspection/Procedures/Coolant Fans.

^ Check that air moves freely through condenser.

- Feel the suction (cold) and output (warm) pipes of the compressor. If there is not a wide temperature difference after the compressor has run for several seconds, check for proper refrigerant charge.

4. Turn off Ignition Switch.

^ Check refrigerant pressure at the low side service fitting.
^ If pressure is less than 172 kPa (26 psi) check refrigerant charge.
^ If refrigerant pressure is higher than 172 kPa (26 psi), isolate trouble conditions using procedures in Diagnostic Test. Testing and Inspection
