Deck Luggage Rack - High Mounted Stop Lamp Interference

Number 86-2-5A Date 4/86

Subject: DEALER INSTALLED DECK LID LUGGAGE RACK

ALL 1986 MODELS
Effective with the 1986 model year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration promulgated a motor vehicle safety standard requiring new passenger cars to be equipped with a center highmounted brake lamp. The federal regulation (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108) prescribes visibility requirements for these brake lights.

It is essential that luggage racks installed on rear decks not interfere with the visibility requirements of the federal standard. GM factory installed luggage racks, as well as properly installed luggage racks available for recommended applications through GM Parts, do not interfere with these requirements.

Deck luggage racks are also available to dealers from independent sources. Dealers are advised to consult with these sources, as well as with their own legal counsel, to satisfy themselves that these luggage racks, as installed, do not interfere with the requirements of FMVSS 108.
