Parking Brake System: Adjustments

LESS REAR DISC BRAKES
Adjustment of parking brake cable is necessary whenever rear brake cables are disconnected. The need for parking brake adjustment is indicated if parking brake pedal travel is less than 9 ratchet clicks or more than 17 ratchet clicks. It is also important that parking brake cables are not adjusted too tightly as brake drag will occur. Incorrect cable tension can damage brake system and cause premature wear to brake linings.
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
2. Apply parking brake pedal two to three ratchet clicks.
3. Tighten adjusting nut until left rear wheel on 1982---85 models, or right rear wheel on 1986---88 models, can just be rotated rearward but is locked when forward rotation is attempted.
4. Release parking brake and check to ensure that rear wheels rotate freely in either direction with no brake drag.

1987---88
1. Apply service brake pedal three times with a force of approximately 175 lbs.
2. Apply and release parking brake three times.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Mark relationship of wheel to axle flange for installation reference.
5. Check parking brake lever for full release as follows:
a. Turn ignition on and ensure ``Brake'' warning lamp is not lit.
b. If warning lamp is lit and brake lever is completely released, remove slack from lever by pulling down on front parking brake cable.
c. Turn ignition off.
6. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies, then reinstall two lug nuts to retain rotors.
7. Pull parking brake lever back exactly four clicks.
8. Ensure parking brake levers on both calipers are contacting lever stops on caliper housings. If levers are not against stops, check for binding in rear cables and loosen cables at adjuster as necessary.
9. Tighten parking brake cable at adjuster until either right or left lever begins to move off stop, then back off until lever moves back just touching stop.
10. Apply and release parking brakes several times and check for proper operation. Parking brake lever should travel 14 clicks and rear wheels should not rotate forward when lever has been moved 8---14 clicks.
