Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

LEFT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant.
2. Remove rocker covers and intake manifold as previously outlined.
3. Remove exhaust crossover, then the oil lever indicator bracket.
4. Remove left exhaust manifold as previously outlined.
5. Disconnect plug wires at left head, then remove pushrods. Intake and exhaust pushrods are different lengths (exhaust pushrods are longer). Intake pushrods are marked orange and are 6 inches long, exhaust pushrods are marked blue and are 6 3/8 inches long.
6. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean gasket surfaces on head, cylinder block and intake manifold, cylinder block bolt threads and the cylinder head bolts.
b. Place gasket in position over dowel pins with ``This Side Up'' marking facing upward.
c. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with suitable sealant.
d. Torque cylinder head bolts to specifications in proper sequence, Fig. 6.
e. Torque rocker arm nuts to specifications.

RIGHT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Raise and support vehicle and disconnect exhaust from crossover, then lower vehicle.
3. Disconnect torque struts from engine.
4. Detach coolant recovery bottle and position aside.
5. Pull engine forward and secure.
6. Remove exhaust crossover heat shield and disconnect crossover from right manifold.
7. Remove right exhaust manifold as previously outlined.
8. Disconnect spark plug wires from right cylinder head.
9. Remove rocker covers and intake manifold as previously outlined.
10. Remove pushrods. Intake and exhaust pushrods are different lengths (exhaust pushrods are longer). Intake pushrods are marked orange and are 6 inches long, exhaust pushrods are marked blue and are 6-3/8 inches long.
11. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean gasket surfaces on head, cylinder block and intake manifold, cylinder block bolt threads and the cylinder head bolts.
b. Place gasket in position over dowel pins with ``This Side Up'' marking facing upward.
c. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with suitable sealant.
d. Torque cylinder head bolts to specification in proper sequence, Fig. 6.
e. Torque rocker arm nuts to specifications.
