4T60/4T60-E Automatic Transaxle

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


Tools Required:

^ J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J 34754 Drive Axle Boot Protectors
^ J 35944 Oil Cooler Flushing Tool


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Heater core hoses with J 37097.
4. Air cleaner assembly.
5. T.V. cable at throttle lever and transaxle.
6. Fluid level indicator and fill tube.
7. Install J 28467-A engine support fixture.
8. Nut securing wiring harness to transaxle.
9. Wiring connectors at:
^ Speed sensor.
^ TCC connector.
^ Neutral start and back-up lamp switch.


IMPORTANT

^ When servicing requires that the "T" latch type wiring connector be disconnected from the switch, care must be taken to ensure proper reassembly of both the connector and the "T" latch. Failure to do so may result in intermittent loss of switch functions.

10. Shift linkage from transaxle.
11. Top two transaxle to engine bolts and left upper transaxle mount and bracket assembly.
12. Rubber hose from transaxle to vent pipe.
13. Remaining upper engine to transaxle bolts.
14. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
15. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
16. Drain transaxle fluid.
17. Shift linkage and bracket from transaxle.
18. Both ball joints from control arms.


NOTICE: Drive axle boot protector J 34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in boot damage and possible joint failure.

19. Both drive axles.
20. Transaxle mounting strut.
21. Left stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
22. Left stabilizer shaft frame bushing clamp nuts.
23. Left suspension support assembly.
24. Front exhaust manifold and pipe.
25. Starter.
26. Transaxle converter cover.





27. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
^ Using a scribe, mark the flywheel to torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly.

28. Transaxle cooler pipes. Plug to prevent leakage.





29. Transaxle to engine support bracket.
30. Position transaxle jack.
31. Remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
32. Transaxle.


INSPECT

^ For inspection and overhaul procedures, refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.

CLEAN

^ Transaxle cooler and lines should be flushed with J 35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement or the torque converter, pump or case.


INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place a thin film of chassis crease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent on the torque converter pilot hub.
^ Make sure to properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.
2. Position transaxle in vehicle.
3. Lower engine to transaxle bolts. Remove transaxle jack.
4. Transaxle to engine support bracket.
5. Transaxle cooler pipes.
6. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.



Tighten
^ All bolts to 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Hand start and torque net slot bolt first. Hand start and torque the two remaining bolts.

7. Transaxle converter cover.
8. Starter.
9. Front exhaust manifold and pipe.
10. Left suspension support assembly.
11. Left stabilizer shaft frame bushing nuts.
12. Stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
13. Transaxle mounting strut.
14. Drive axle seal protector J 37292-A and drive axles.
15. Both ball joints to control arms.
16. Remove drive axle seal protectors.
17. Shift linkage bracket to transaxle.
18. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
19. Lower vehicle.
20. Upper engine to transaxle bolts.
21. Left side transaxle mount.
22. Shift linkage to transaxle.
23. Wiring connectors at:
^ Speed sensor.
^ TCC connector.
^ Neutral start and back-up lamp switch.
24. Wiring harness and nut securing it to transaxle.
25. Remove Engine Support Fixture J 28467-A.
26. Fluid level indicator and fill tube.
27. T.V. cable at transaxle and throttle lever.
28. Rubber hose to transaxle vent pipe.
29. Air cleaner assembly.
30. Heater core hoses.
31. Fill cooling system.
32. Negative battery cable.
33. Transaxle fluid.

ADJUST

^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift linkage.

INSPECT

^ Fluid level.
^ Oil leaks.
