Part IV

ENGINE CRANKS BUT WILL NOT RUN 2.3L (VIN D, A & 3) "N" CARLINE

Circuit Description:
This engine is equipped with a distributorless ignition system called the Electronic Ignition (EI) system. The primary circuit of the EI system consists of two separate ignition coils, an Ignition Control Module (ICM) and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor as well as the related connecting wires and the Ignition Control (IC) portion of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Each secondary circuit consists of the secondary winding of the coil, two connecting metal strips molded into the coil housing, the spark plug boot/connector assemblies and spark plugs.

Chart Test Description: Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.

14. This step verifies if there is a frequency output coming from the PCM.
15. This step identifies a short in the circuit.
16. This step will verify if the open circuit is in the ICM or circuit.
17. If there is a short to battery voltage there will be no frequency response~ This step will show if there is a short to the battery.
18. This step will determine if the circuit or the ICM is shorted to ground.
19. If CKT 423 and CKT 406 are shorted together there will not be a frequency signal. This step determines if CKT 423 and CKT 406 are shorted together.
