Refer to Fig. 60 when performing the following replacement procedures:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove front door inside carpet retainers.
3. Remove right and left sound insulators.
4. Remove windshield upper garnish moldings, Figs. 61.
5. Insert a flat blade screwdriver at rearmost edge of upper trim panel, pry panel up to release six upper trim panel retainers.
6. Left rear edge of upper trim panel approximately two inches, then pull panel rearward to remove.
7. Remove screws under lower instrument panel compartment.
8. Remove screws holding lower compartment hinge to instrument panel, then the screws at top of lower compartment.
9. Remove screws holding plastic clips under compartment.
10. Remove opening screw, then slide lower compartment out of instrument panel.
11. Disconnect electrical connectors to lamp and rear compartment lid release switch.
12. Remove theft deterrent module assembly attaching bolts, Fig. 63.
13. Remove module assembly bracket from tie bar assembly.
14. Disconnect module electrical connector.
15. Remove bolt from bottom tab on passenger inflator module.
16. Remove inflator module to bag bracket attaching bolts.
17. Remove passenger inflator module from instrument panel.

WARNING: When carrying a live inflator, ensure bag and trim cover are pointed away in case of accidental deployment. Do not carry inflator module by wires of connector on underside of module. When placing a live inflator module on a bench or other surface, ensure bag and trim cover faces in a upward direction. Never rest steering column assembly on steering wheel with inflator module face down and column vertical. This is necessary in case of accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

18. Remove steering column opening filler.
19. On models with center console, remove console as follows:
a. Using a screwdriver, remove shift handle snap ring.
b. Remove shift handle.
c. Remove console retaining screws from rear compartment.
d. Remove front floor console shift opening trim, by prying two rear tabs gently with a small screwdriver.
e. Raise armrest and remove ashtray and steel flame plate.
f. Loosen screws inside ashtray area, then pry sides of base apart.
g. Remove armrest at rear hinge area, from between base halves.
h. Disconnect console wiring and electrical connectors.
i. Remove console front and rear attaching bolts.
j. Remove console assembly.
20. Remove two instrument panel accessory trim plate attaching screws.
21. Pull instrument panel accessory trim plate rearward to release two steel retainers, then rotate trim plate rearward and up to release two tabs at top edge.
22. Rotate ventilation control assembly clockwise to unsnap.
23. Pull ventilation control assembly away from instrument panel and disconnect electrical connectors.
24. On models with column shift, set parking brake and position shift lever to "L1."
25. Tilt steering column to its lowest position.
26. Remove tilt lever assembly.
27. Insert screwdriver into slot in instrument panel cluster trim plate directly below headlamp switch.
28. Push screwdriver handle down, releasing tab, pull plate rearward.
29. Grasp trim plate at right end below right center A/C outlet and carefully pull to release clip.
30. Remove instrument cluster trim plate to instrument panel attaching screw.
31. Grasp bottom edge of cluster trim plate on both sides of steering column and pull to release two additional retaining clips.
32. Disconnect cigarette lighter electrical connector.
33. Insert screwdriver into slot at left upper corner of trim plate and raise handle.
34. Pull rearward at top center of trim plate to disengage plastic clip, then remove trim plate from vehicle.
35. Remove audio assembly mounting screws
36. Slide audio assembly out of instrument panel and disconnect electrical connectors.
37. Press two push pin retainers at top of instrument cluster.
38. Rotate top of cluster rearward and disengage locating pins on bottom of cluster at instrument panel.
39. Disconnect cluster electrical connector and remove cluster.
40. Remove headlamp switch and trip calculator.
41. Disconnect fuse block electrical connector.
42. Rotate fuse block to release locking tabs, then remove fuse block.
43. Remove steering column to support bracket attaching bolts, then lower column.
44. Remove instrument panel attaching bolts and screws.
45. Remove lower compartment lamp and trunk release switch from instrument panel.
46. Remove instrument panel retaining clips and reposition wiring harness.
47. Remove instrument panel from vehicle.
48. Reverse procedure to install.
