Engine Control Module: Service and Repair

PCM Mounting:

Service of the Powertrain control module should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or reprogramming of the EEPROM.

NOTE: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Please do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle.

CAUTION:
- To prevent internal PCM damage, the ignition must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting power to PCM (for example, battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.).
- To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the PCM, Do Not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. PCM mounting hardware.
3. Connectors from PCM.
4. PCM from engine compartment.
5. PCM access cover.
6. Knock Sensor (KS) module.

NOTE:
- If the PCM is to be replaced, remove new PCM from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same as the defective PCM.
- The Knock Sensor (KS) module must be transferred to the replacement PCM. The replacement PCM is supplied without a EEPROM program, the replacement PCM must be programmed before the vehicle will run.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Knock Sensor (KS) module.
2. Access cover on PCM.
3. Connectors to PCM.
4. PCM located under hood.
5. Negative battery cable.

EEPROM PROGRAMMING
1. Setup:
- Battery is charged.
- Ignition is "ON."
- Battery/cig. lighter connection secure.
- Data Link Connector (DLC), must be secure.
2. Refer to equipment user's instructions for up-to-date programming instructions.
3. If PCM fails to program, do the following:
- Check all PCM connections.
- Check Techline terminal / equipment for latest software version.
- Try again to program the PCM. If it fails again, replace the PCM. Replacement PCM must be programmed.
4. If vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket anti-theft system, it may require a reset procedure.

FUNCTIONAL CHECK
- Use Techline terminal / equipment to perform the "On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check,"
OR
- Refer to On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check.
