Engine Removal and Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain and recover coolant
3. On models equipped with A/C, recover refrigerant.Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Service and Repair.
4. On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove left sound insulator and disconnect clutch push rod from pedal assembly.
5. On all models, disconnect heater hose at thermostat housing.
6. Disconnect radiator upper inlet hose.
7. Remove air cleaner assembly.
8. Remove coolant fan.
9. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect compressor/condenser hose assembly at compressor and discard O-rings.
10. On all models, disconnect vacuum hoses from front of engine.
11. Disconnect the following connections:
a. Generator.
b. A/C compressor, if equipped.
c. Injector harness.
d. Idle Air Control (IAC) and Throttle Position (TP) sensors at throttle body.
e. Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor.
f. Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor.
g. EVAP Canister Purge solenoid.
h. Starter solenoid.
i. Ground connections.
j. Negative battery cable from transaxle.
k. Electronic Ignition Coil and Module ASM.
l. Two Engine Coolant Temperature sensors.
m. Oil Pressure sensor/switch.
n. Oxygen sensor (O2S).
o. Crankshaft Position (CP) sensor.
p. Back up lamp switch .
q. Camshaft position sensor.
12. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose from throttle body.
13. Disconnect throttle cable and bracket.
14. Remove powering steering bolts and pump. Position pump aside with lines attached.
15. Disconnect fuel lines. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Fuel Pressure Relief. Under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Procedures/Diagnostic Charts/A Charts/Chart A-7 Fuel System Diagnosis.
16. Disconnect shift cables.
17. On models equipped with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch actuator line.
18. On all models, remove exhaust manifold and heat shield.
19. Disconnect radiator lower outlet hose.
20. Install engine support fixture No. 28467-A.
21. Remove coolant recovery tank attaching bolt and position tank aside with hoses connected.
22. Remove engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replace. Refer to Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories.
23. Raise and support vehicle.
24. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
25. Remove right splash shield.
26. Disconnect the following electrical connections:
a. Vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
b. Knock sensor.
c. Starter solenoid.
d. Both front ABS wheel speed sensors.
27. Remove engine mount strut and transaxle mount. Refer to Engine Mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replace. Refer to Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories.
28. Separate ball joints from steering knuckles.
29. Remove suspension supports, crossmember and stabilizer shaft as an assembly.
30. Remove heater outlet hose from radiator outlet pipe.
31. On models equipped with manual transaxle, disconnect axle shaft from transaxle and intermediate shaft and position aside.
32. On all models, remove flywheel housing cover.
33. Position suitable support below engine and lower car onto support.
34. Mark threads on support fixture hooks so setting can be duplicated when reinstalling engine. Remove engine support fixture J-hooks.
35. Raise vehicle slowly off engine and transaxle assembly. Note that it may be necessary to move engine/transaxle assembly rearward to clear the intake manifold.
36. Separate engine from transaxle.
37. Reverse procedure to install noting to refill all drained fluids and to tighten all fasteners to specifications.
