Subject:
Squeak/Squawk Noise Coming from Bottom of Steering Column (Replace and/or Lubricate Lower Bearing Assembly)
Models:
1995-97 Oldsmobile Achieva
1995-97 Pontiac Grand Am
Condition
Some owners may comment on a squeak/squawk noise coming from the bottom of the steering column. The noise will be heard when turning the steering wheel with the engine running or not running.
Cause
Condition may be due to the lower bearing assembly.
Correction
For EVO (Electronic Variable Orifice, RPO NV7) applications, replace the white lower bearing assembly with a green lower bearing assembly, P/N 26044518, and add lubricant, P/N 12345718, on bearing surfaces.
Service Procedure
Use the disassemble steps in Section 3F5 (for tilt column), or 3F4 (for standard column) of the Service Manual. On reassembly, apply lubricant,
P/N 12345718, on the new bearing assembly and the shaft assembly as shown in Figure 1.
For non-EVO applications, apply lubricant, P/N 12345718, on the bearing assembly and shaft assembly as shown in Figure 1.
