Ignition Control Module: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness connector.
3. Remove the ignition coil and electronic ignition control module assembly to cam housing bolts.
4. Remove the ignition coil and electronic ignition control module assembly from the engine.
5. Remove the housing to cover screws (7).
6. Remove the housing (6) from the cover (1).
7. Remove the coil harness connector (4) from the module (2).
8. Remove the module to cover Screws (3).
9. Remove the module (2) from the cover (1).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

CAUTION: DO NOT wipe grease from the module or coil if the same module is to be replaced. If a new module is to be installed, a package of silicone grease will be included with it. Spread the grease on the metal face of the module and on the cover where the module seats. This grease is necessary for module cooling.

1. Install the module (2) to the cover (1).
2. Install the module to cover screws (3).

Tighten
Screws to 4 Nm (35 lb. in.).

3. Connect the coil harness connector (4) to the module.
4. Install the housing (6) to the cover (1).
5. Install the housing to cover screws (7).

Tighten
Screws to 4 Nm (35 lb. in.).

6. Connect the spark plug boots (8) and the retainers (9) to the housing (6).
7. Install the ignition coil and ignition control module assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the boots to the spark plug terminals.

Important: The ICM cover bolts must be installed with isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.

8. Install the ignition coil and the ignition control module assembly to cam housing bolts after coating the threads with 1052080.

Tighten
Bolts to 22 Nm (16 lb. ft.).

9. Connect the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11 pin harness connector.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
