Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

General Description

The ABS VI regulates the brake pressure at each front wheel and both rear wheels as a pair to reduce the tendency of any wheel to lock-up, thus improving the driver's control of the vehicle during braking. Improved stability and steerability allow the vehicle to be controlled around obstacles during a panic stop. ABS operation is available from approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) to the maximum vehicle speed.

Important: ABS VI CANNOT INCREASE BRAKE PRESSURE ABOVE MASTER CYLINDER PRESSURE APPLIED BY THE DRIVER AND CANNOT APPLY THE BRAKES BY ITSELF.

The Enhanced Traction System (ETS) is standard on 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix except for vehicles equipped with the supercharged 3800 engine package RPO (L67). The Antilock Brake System and the Enhanced Traction System (ABS/ETS) are both part of the same hydraulic and electric system. Both systems use many of the same components and a problem in either system may disable the other system until it is repaired. Antilock braking controls wheel slip when braking. The Enhanced Traction System (ETS) provides the capability to control wheel spin at the driven wheels. This improves the ability to maintain vehicle stability and acceleration (drive traction) under changing road and vehicle load conditions.

The Variable Effort Steering (VES) control logic is integrated in the EBCM/EBTCM. Two Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in the EBCM/EBTCM for VES malfunctions. The VES and the ABS share the same wheel speed sensors.
