Instrument Panel Assembly Replacement
Instrument Panel Assembly Removal
Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. For Vehicles equipped with OnStar (UE1) with Back Up Battery: The Back Up Battery is a redundant power supply to allow limited OnStar functionality in the event of a main vehicle battery power disruption to the VCIM (OnStar module). Do not disconnect the main vehicle battery or remove the OnStar fuse with the ignition key in any position other than OFF. Retained accessory power (RAP) should be allowed to time out or be disabled (simply opening the driver door should disable RAP) before disconnecting power. Disconnecting power to the OnStar module in any way while the ignition is On or with RAP activated may cause activation of the OnStar Back-Up Battery (BUB) system and will discharge and permanently damage the back-up battery. Once the Back-Up Battery is activated it will stay on until it has completely discharged. The BUB is not rechargeable and once activated the BUB must be replaced.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
- Air bag deployment
- Personal injury
- Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
- Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
- If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.
2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System Service and Repair.
3. Remove the center console if necessary. Refer to Console Replacement Service and Repair.
4. Remove the auto transmission control assembly, if equipped with a console. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement Service and Repair.
5. Remove the IP trim plate. Refer toInstrumentn Cluster Trim Panel Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Remove the steering column filler. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement Service and Repair.
Important: Remove the steering column lower mounting bolts prior to removing the upper mounting bolts or damage to the lower steering column bearing may occur. Place a protective cloth on the steering column in order to protect the column from scratches.
7. Lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement. Steering Column - Removal and Installation

10. Remove the fasteners (5) from the IP support bracket.
11. Remove the fasteners (4) from the steering column support.
12. Remove the lower fasteners (3) from the IP end support brackets.
13. Remove the fasteners (6) from the IP center bracket.
14. Remove the upper fasteners (2) from the IP end support brackets.
15. Remove the fasteners (1) from the upper IP.
16. Disconnect the electrical connectors, including antenna coax cable.
17. Remove the aspirator hose.
18. Remove the IP assembly.
Installation Procedure
Important: When installing the IP assembly, if the assembly does not properly align with the bottom of the windshield, loosen the center and the right IP support brackets in order to allow the proper alignment. Re-tighten the brackets after the IP assembly is aligned.
1. Partially install the IP assembly into position.
2. Install the aspirator hose.
3. Connect the electrical connectors, including the antenna coax cable.
4. Align the IP assembly.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
5. Install the fasteners (1) into the upper IP.
Tighten
Tighten the fasteners to 3 Nm (27 lb in).
6. Install the upper fasteners (2) to the IP end support brackets.
