4T40-E Automatic Transaxle

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
- J 35944-A Oil Cooler Flushing Tool





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission.
4. Disconnect the wiring connections from the transmission.
5. Install the J 28467-360 to the transmission.





6. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts.
7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Remove both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
9. Remove the left splash shield.
10. Remove the right splash shield.
11. Remove both of the front ABS wheel speed sensors and the harness from the left side suspension support. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
12. Remove both of the outer tie rods from the steering knuckle assembly. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Suspension.
13. Remove both of the ball joints from the steering knuckle assembly. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Suspension.





14. Remove the front suspension support brace bolts.





15. Remove the front suspension support brace.
16. Remove the engine mount strut from the strut mount bracket.
^ Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine.





17. Remove the suspension support assembly bolts.





18. Remove the suspension support assembly.
19. Remove the lower suspension support assembly enough to disconnect the steering coupling, and both of the power steering fluid lines.
20. Remove both of the drive axles from the transmission and the support. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
21. Remove the engine to transmission brace. Refer to A/T Mount Replacement (Front), A/T Mount Replacement (Rear) and A/T Mount Replacement (Side).
22. Remove the shift cable bracket.
23. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
24. Remove the transmission converter cover. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
25. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
26. Remove the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement.
27. Remove the brake hose bracket to body.
28. Remove the transmission mount pipe expansion bolt. Refer to A/T Mount Replacement (Front), A/T Mount Replacement (Rear) and A/T Mount Replacement (Side).
29. Remove the transmission mount to body bolts.
30. Lower the vehicle.
31. Lower the transmission with the engine support fixture enough to remove the transmission.
32. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
33. Support the transmission.





34. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.





35. Remove the transmission.
36. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with the J 35944-A, or equivalent, whenever the transmission has been removed for overhaul or replacement.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture





1. Place a thin film of chassis grease GM P/N 1051344, or the equivalent, on the torque converter pilot hub.
2. Ensure that the torque converter is properly seated in the oil pump.
3. Position the transmission in the vehicle.





4. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts.
5. Lower the vehicle.





6. Use the J 28467-360 in order to raise the transmission.
7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Install the transmission mount to body bolts. Refer to A/T Mount Replacement (Front), A/T Mount Replacement (Rear), A/T Mount Replacement (Rear) and A/T Mount Replacement (Side).
9. Install the brake hose bracket to body.
10. Install the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement.
11. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to A/T Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement.
12. Install the transmission converter cover. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
13. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
14. Install the shift cable bracket.
^ Tighten the bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

15. Install the engine to transmission brace. Refer to A/T Mount Replacement (Front), A/T Mount Replacement (Rear) and A/T Mount Replacement (Side).
16. Install both of the drive axles. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
17. Raise the suspension support assembly enough to connect the steering coupling and both of the power steering fluid lines.





18. Install the front suspension support assembly.





19. Install the suspension support assembly bolts.
20. Install the engine mount strut to the suspension support.
^ Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine.





21. Install the front suspension support brace.





22. Install the front suspension support brace bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 66 Nm (49 ft. lbs.).

23. Install both of the ball joints to the steering knuckle assembly. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Suspension.
24. Install both of the outer tie rods to the steering knuckle assembly. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement in Suspension.
25. Install both of the front ABS wheel speed sensors and the harness to the left side suspension support. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (Front) in Antilock Brake System and Enhanced Traction System.
26. Install the right splash shield.
27. Install the left splash shield.
28. Install both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
29. Lower the vehicle.





30. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts.
^ Tighten all of the bolts to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).





31. Remove the J 28467-360 from the transmission.
32. Connect the wiring connections to the transmission.
33. Install the shift linkage to the transmission.
34. Install the air cleaner assembly.
35. Connect the negative battery cable.
36. Inspect the transmission oil level. Refer to A/T Fluid/Filter Changing.
37. Apply the brakes. Start the engine. Shift the transmission from R (Reverse) to D (Drive).
38. Install the transmission mount pipe expansion bolt.
39. Adjust the shift linkage.
