Removal and Replacement

Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Install the engine support fixture.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.
5. Disconnect shift control cable bracket with cable attached.
6. Remove the upper transaxle case to engine bolts (1 - 6).
7. Remove the upper bolt from rear transaxle mount.
8. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
9. Remove the engine frame.
10. Remove the left and right drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
11. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.





12. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Mark the flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.





13. Disconnect Input speed sensor electrical connectors.
14. Remove the engine to transaxle brace.





15. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.





16. Remove the right transaxle mount.





17. Remove the remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
18. Remove the transaxle from vehicle using an appropriate transmission jack.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the transaxle into the vehicle and align the the engine alignment dowels (1 and 6).





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the lower transaxle case to engine bolts.

- Tighten the lower transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).





3. Install the right transaxle mount.





4. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to Fluid Filler Tube Replacement.





5. Install the transaxle brace to engine.

- Tighten the transaxle brace to engine bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).

6. Connect the input speed sensor electrical connectors.





Important:
- Align the mark made on the torque converter with the mark made on the flywheel made in the disassembly unless installing a new converter.
- Tighten all the torque converter to flywheel bolts twice.

7. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.

- Tighten the flywheel to torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.





Important: Use care when installing the right side
drive axle into the transaxle case. The splined shaft of
the drive axle can easily damage the seal.

9. Install the left drive axle and the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
10. Install the engine frame.
11. Connect the oxygen sensor connector.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Install the upper transaxle case to engine bolts.

- Tighten the upper transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

14. Install the top bolt of the left transaxle mount.

- Tighten the left transaxle bolt to 58 Nm (42 ft. lbs.).

15. Connect the shift control cable and the shift control cable bracket.
16. Check adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Adjustment.
17. Connect the transaxle electrical connector.
18. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement.
19. Connect the negative battery cable.
20. Flush the transmission cooler. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing.
21. Check and adjust the transaxle fluid level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications.
22. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
23. Check front end alignment.
