Instrument Panel Carrier Replacement (Pontiac)
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.
2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
3. Remove the defroster grille (4).
4. Remove the end caps.
5. Remove the accessory trim plate.
6. Remove the HVAC control.
7. Remove the radio.
8. Remove the instrument panel trim pad.
Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:
* Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module
* Make sure the bag opening points away from you
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.
Remove the IP SIR module.
9. Remove the air distribution ducts (3).
10. Remove the steering wheel SIR module.
11. Remove the steering wheel.
12. Remove the tilt lever.
13. Remove the steering wheel column covers.
14. Remove the steering wheel multifunction lever.
15. Remove the washer lever.
16. Remove the screws (4) from the tie bar (2).
17. Remove the panel (3) from the tie bar (2).
Installation Procedure
1. Install the panel (3) to the tie bar (2).
2. Install the screws (4) to the tie bar (2).
3. Install the tilt lever.
4. Install the steering wheel column covers.
5. Install the steering wheel multifunction lever.
6. Install the washer switch.
7. Install the steering wheel.
Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:
* Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module
* Make sure the bag opening points away from you
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. Install the steering wheel SIR module.

9. Install the radio.
10. Install the HVAC control.
11. Install the accessory trim plate.
12. Install the IP SIR module.
13. Install the end caps.
14. Install the defroster grille.
15. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
