Instrument Panel Carrier Replacement (Pontiac)

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Caution: Refer to Restraint System Service Precautions in Service Precautions.

2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling and to SIR Disabling and Enabling in Restraint Systems.
3. With a flat-bladed tool, remove the instrument panel (I/P) defroster grille.
4. Remove the I/P outer trim cover screws.
5. Remove the outer trim covers from the I/P carrier.
6. Remove the radio from the I/P carrier.
7. Remove the right I/P trim panel screws.




8. Remove the right I/P trim panel from the I/P carrier (3).
9. Remove the I/P trim pad.
10. Remove the I/P SIR module.
11. Remove the screw (4) from the HVAC temperature control cable.
12. Remove the control cable end (3) from the door lever (2).
13. Remove the HVAC control assembly from the I/P carrier. Leave the harnesses connected to the HVAC control and position aside.




14. Remove the air distribution duct.
15. Remove the steering wheel.
16. Remove the tilt lever.
17. Remove the washer lever.
18. Remove the screws (4) from the I/P carrier (3).
19. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the lower tie bar (2).
20. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure




1. Place the I/P carrier (3) into the vehicle.
2. Install the I/P carrier (3) to the tie bar (2).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the screws (4) to the I/P carrier (3).

Tighten the screws to 2.3 N.m (20 lb in).

4. Install the washer switch.
5. Install the tilt lever.
6. Install the steering wheel.
7. Install the air distribution duct.
8. Install the HVAC control assembly from the I/P carrier.




9. Install the end of the HVAC temperature control cable (3) to the door lever (2).
10. Install the control cable screw (4).

Tighten the screw to 2 N.m (18 lb in).

11. Install the I/P SIR module.
12. Install the I/P trim pad.
13. Install the right I/P trim panel to the I/P carrier.
14. Install the right I/P trim panel screws.

Tighten the screws to 2.3 N.m (20 lb in).

15. Install the radio to the I/P carrier.
16. Install the I/P outer trim covers.
17. Install the I/P outer trim cover screws.

Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).

18. Install the I/P defroster grille to the I/P trim pad.
Press into place until fully seated.
19. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling and to SIR Disabling and Enabling in Restraint Systems.
20. Connect the negative battery cable.
