Revised Power Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS))

with Hydraulic Power Steering

This bulletin is being issued to revise the Power Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Power Steering (HPSS) in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual. Please replace the current information in the Service Manual with the following information.

The following information has been updated within SI. If you are using a paper version of this Service Manual, please make a reference to this bulletin on the affected page.

Power Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS))

Removal Procedure

1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight forward position, Support it from movement, and remove the key from the ignition.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

3. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

4. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement.

5. Remove the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

6. If equipped, remove the crossbrace. Refer to Frame Brake Replacement.





7. Disconnect the power steering inlet and outlet pipe/hose fittings from the from the power steering gear. Cap off the fittings and set aside.

8. Remove the rear transmission mount. Refer to the following:

^ Transmission Rear Mount Replacement in Manual Transmission - F40

^ Transmission Rear Mount Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E

9. Remove the power steering gear bolts (1) from the gear.

10. Remove the power steering gear (2) through the left wheel opening.

Installation Procedure





1. Position the power steering gear (2) to the vehicle.

Note:
Refer to Fastener Notice.

2. Install the power steering gear bolts (1) to the gear.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 110 N.m (81 lb ft).

3. Install the rear transmission mount. Refer to the following:

^ Transmission Rear Mount Replacement in Manual Transmission - F40

^ Transmission Rear Mount Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E

4. Remove the power steering caps from the power steering inlet and outlet pipe/hoses and connect the fittings to the steering gear.

Tighten

Tighten the power steering fitting to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).

5. If equipped, install the crossbrace. Refer to Frame Brace Replacement.

6. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

7. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement.

8. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

9. Lower the vehicle.

10. Bleed the air from the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.

11. Align the front wheels. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment.
