Parking Brake System: Adjustments



Parking Brake Adjustment

Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution (Safety Glasses Warning) .
Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution (Service Precautions) .
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution (Brake Dust Caution) .





Important: The park brake cable adjustment bolt cover trim (1) is retained by two clips. Gently pry upwards with fingers at the front floor console armrest latch to remove.


1. Remove the park brake cable adjustment bolt cover trim (1).




2. Loosen the park brake cable adjustment bolt (1) several turns to allow slack in the park brake rear cables.
3. Make sure that the park brake actuator arms have fully retracted.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer toLifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair) .
5. Remove the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .




6. Install 2 wheel nuts (2) in reverse to opposite wheel studs to retain the brake disc (3) to the hub.
7. Make sure that the brake disc (3) is free and does not bind. If the brake disc (3) is binding refer to the following procedures.

* Brake Rotor Thickness Variation Measurement (Brake Rotor Thickness Variation Measurement).
* Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout Measurement (Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout Measurement).
* Brake Caliper Inspection (Front) (Brake Caliper Inspection (Front))Brake Caliper Inspection (Rear) (Brake Caliper Inspection (Rear)).

8. Remove the access hole plug (1) from the brake disc (3).




9. Using a suitable lever such as a screwdriver, tighten the adjuster nut (1), until the brake disc is locked.
10. Loosen the adjuster nut (1) 3-5 clicks. Make sure that the brake disc is free and does not bind.




11. Install the access hole plug (1).
12. Remove the 2 wheel nuts (2) retaining the brake disc (3) to the hub
13. Install the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
14. Lower the vehicle.




15. Apply the park brake until the lever is extended 4-6 clicks.
16. Tighten the park brake cable adjustment bolt (1) to remove any excess slack from the park brake cable.
17. Make sure that this adjustment applies the park brake shoes by attempting to turn each rear wheel.
18. Release the park brake and inspect that each rear wheel is free and does not bind.
19. Lower the vehicle to the ground.




20. Install the park brake cable adjustment bolt cover trim (1).
