DTC P0500

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

DTC Descriptors
DTC P0500
- Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit

Circuit/System Description

The wheel speed sensors provide an A/C signal input to the electronic brake control module (EBCM). The A/C signal is converted to digital information and sent out as high speed communication on the controller area network (CAN). The vehicle speed is used by the instrument panel (IP) to display vehicle speed and to the engine control module (ECM) to maintain engine and vehicle operating parameters and conditions.

Conditions for Running the DTC

P0500
* No communication codes are set.
* Engine speed is 1800-2200 RPM.
* ECM deceleration fuel shutoff is active.
* Engine coolant temperature is greater than 65° (149°F).
* Vehicle speed is less than 4.83 km/h (3 mph) for a total of 1 minute.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The ECM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the Conditions for setting the DTC are met.
* The ECM records the operating conditions when the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. The ECM stores this information as Freeze Frames and Failure Records.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0500 is a Type A DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

1. If DTCs C0200-C0215, C1235-C1239, C1271-C1278 or any U-communication DTCs are set, diagnose those DTCs first.
2. Observe the EBCM, IP and ECM speed signal parameters with a scan tool, while driving the vehicle. All three parameters values should be identical.
3. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC, to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

Note: You must perform the Circuit/System Verification first.

Refer to Symptoms - Data Communications (- Symptoms - Data Communications).

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the repair.

Refer to Control Module References (Programming and Relearning) for ECM replacement, setup and programming.
