Modified Steering
Locking cam and ignition/starter switch were installed in production during May 1981.
Replacement parts are available. Thus, it is no longer necessary to replace entire steering post extension if lock cylinder is damaged or steering locking cam jams.
Available parts:
^ Lock cylinder without specified key No. 1 Part No. 928 347 915 00
^ Lock cylinder with specified key No. 1 Part No. 928 347 917 00
^ Grooved pin, 2a Part No. 900 091 001 00
^ Split tapered sleeve, 2b Part No. 900 095 007 00
^ Locking cam complete, 3 Part No. 928 347 919 00
^ Ignition/starter switch, 4 Part No. 928 613 017 01
Note Previous version ignition/starter switch, Part No. 928 613 017 00, and locking cam, Part No. 928 347 919 00 (Part No. unchanged), are no longer available as spare parts.
New-type locking cam can be installed together with new-type ignition/starter switch. When installing new-type ignition starter switch, either oldor new-type locking cam can be used.
Lock Cylinder, Removing
NOTE On some 1983 model vehicles, the lock cylinders were retained in the steering lock assembly with a 4 mm notched pin rather than with the planned, 3 mm notched pin (arrow).
On steering lock units with 4 mm pins the lock cylinder cannot be replaced separately. In these cases the entire steering lock assembly must be replaced; Part No. 928 347 903 02 - without specified key No. 928 347 903 03 - with specified key No.
To determine the notched pin diameter, drive the pin slightly into its bore, and then measure bore diameter with a Vernier Caliper. If pin is 3 mm, proceed with replacement of the lock cylinder as follows:
- disconnect battery ground cable
- remove steering wheel (mark position beforehand)
- remove instrument panel and lay aside
- unplug instrument harness
- insert ignition key in lock and turn to ignition position
- using 2-2.5 mm diameter drift, drive grooved pin into steering-lock
- pull out lock cylinder from cavity
Note If lock cylinder is to be re-used, the pin must be removed from the lock cylinder housing. To do this, the space between lock cylinder housing and center piece, on back of lock cylinder, must be enlarged at one point as follows:
- clamp removed lock cylinder in vise (grip lightly)
- using 3.5 mm (9/64 in.) drill, carefully enlarge hole (arrow)
CAUTION
To prevent metal chips from getting inside lock cylinder, grease the hole and the drill before drilling. Then remove grease and chips.
- remove pin through enlarged hole with longnosed pliers or two small screwdrivers
- pull cam out with long-nosed pliers. A slight jerk is required
- pull connector off ignition/starter switch, remove two screws from front, and remove switch
Lock Cylinder, Installing
- install new locking cam (with needle-nose pliers)
CAUTION
Steering lock must not be engaged. If engaged, press locking lever slightly right and turn steering column slightly.
- insert cam carefully so shaft is on left side of elongated hole and flat surface on cam lobe faces upwards.
CAUTION
Shaft of cam must not press sideways on small plastic plate with spring when being installed.
- turn cam 1/4 turn to right and at the same time move shaft slightly to the right. Push cam fully in.
- install new lock cylinder, rotating it slightly with key if necessary until shaft of locking cam catches.
- drive in new grooved pin to lock cylinder in place.
Note
If installation of lock cylinder is final use grooved pin, Part No. 900 091 001 00, and drive it in until flush with housing.
If lock cylinder is only being temporarily installed (for an unnumbered-key lock cylinder until a numbered-key cylinder is available), use the splittaper cleeve, Part No. 900 095 007 00. When this sleeve is driven in, make sure to leave 4 mm sticking out beyond the steering-lock housing for ease in later removal, thus allowing the lock cylinder to be used again.
- pull out ignition key and remount electric ignition switch in position shown check that steering lock operates properly by placing steering wheel in position and turning
- plug harness into switch
- reinstall instrument panel
- reinstall steering wheel
- reconnect battery and check operation of all instruments.
