Subject:
Routing Cable Harness for Cabriolet Top

ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician

Models Affected:

911 Carrera 2/4 1990-1992 models

Concern:

Incorrectly positioning the "B" pillar wiring harness for the Cabriolet top can cause damage and/or breakage of the harness. This can result in:
- loss of function of the top locking motors.
- power top inoperable.
- illumination of the top warning light.

General Information:

With the Cabriolet top open, it is possible for the cable hamess routed along the "B" pillar to be pinched between the "B" pillar and the top operating lever (Figure 1, arrow A and Figure 2). This may also cause knocking noises, if the "B" pillar touches the top operating linkage (Figure 2).

Harness damage can be due to incorrect positioning the of harness clamp (Figure 1, arrow B). The correct position for the harness clamp is at a 45° angle (see Figure 3). The cable harness should run parallel to the "B" pillar.

Damage to the cable harness can also occur at the lower hinge point of the "B" pillar. This is caused by the incorrect positioning or turning of the lower harness clamp (Figure 1, arrow C).

Repair Procedure:

In case of customer complaints concerning the Cabriolet top operation, please check the following points:

-Check and, if necessary, correct the position of the harness clamp (arrow Figure 3). The clamp should be positioned at a 45~ angle (Figure 3). Removal of the rear top inside bow cover will be necessary in order to check the cable harness routing.

Also check the lower cable harness clamp position. When tightening the cable harness clamps to the "B" pillar, be certain the clamps do not turn.

If the customer complains of knocking/rattling noises when the top is down, the adjustment of the lower microswitch (Figure 4) on the right side top operating transmission must be checked. The adjustment is correct when the holding pegs (Figure 5) are engaged in the top frame and the microswitch has switched. The clearance of the connecting lever to the "B" pillar with the top fully open must be at least 3.0 mm (Figure 2).

If correct adjustment of the lower microswitch is not possible, the top must be adjusted by means of the bearing blocks, located below the top operating transmissions.
