Convertible Top Canvas: Service and Repair
Top CanvasThe top canvas is cemented at the front on the roof frame. The end on the windshield frame consists of a profiled rubber seal (1) with molded ends, which is mounted on the front roof frame with a holder (2) (Section A - A).
The top canvas bears on the side roof frame (Section B - B).
The rear top bow, which is made of a profile sectioned strip, is used for connection between the front top canvas section (3) and rear section (4). The rear section is cemented on this profile sectioned strip (Section C - C).
The front top canvas section is cemented on a holder, which is screwed on the profile sectioned strip.
The rear holder with threaded take-ups for mounting of the top is manufactured of closed steel sheet.
The rear section is cemented on it (Section D - D).
This holder is also used to take the Tenax snap lower sections for fastening of the top cover.
The top canvas is held tight on the side by a spring-loaded cable (1). Spring (2) is mounted on the front roof frame. Tension can be adjusted with bolt (3).
Strap (4) is applied on the side to guarantee correct folding and storing of the top frame and top canvas while lowering the convertible top. This strap is mounted on the roof frame and rear top bow (5), and connects main bow (6) and auxiliary bow (7).
Some of the first standard production cars had a retaining pin (arrow) at the top of the B-pillars, which is omitted in the meantime (since June 1, 1989).
These pins must be removed from cars with pins and suitable plugs inserted in the tapped bores.
