Work Procedure
Before starting, the roof should be checked to see which version panel is installed.1.0 Open the convertible-top approximately halfway.
1.1 Starting in the passenger compartment, pull the headliner away slightly from the convertible-top on the side at the top (arrow, figure 3) in the area of the bearing surface of roof frame 1 to roof frame 2. The opening for the bearing surface in roof frame 1 must be visible (arrow E, figure 4).
1.2 Using a flashlight, illuminate the opening. The underside of the panel is now visible (arrow A, figure 4). Determine which type of surface is present.
1.3 If the surface is felt, the panel must be replaced, continue with step 2.0.
1.4 If the surface is flocked, the panel must be removed and checked. If the flocked surface is rubbed through, the paned needs to be replaced. Go to step 2.0
2.0 Removing / Replacing the panel for roof frame 1.
2.1 Move the convertible-top rearward by means of the electric motor until the convertible-top compartment lid has reached its rear end position.
2.2 Move the convertible top forward by means of the electric motor until the convertible-top compartment lid just moves forward, and then stop it.
2.3 Disengage the cloth covering at the rear and the tension cables on the left and right sides.
2.4 Fold the tension bow upward toward the main bow until it engages.
2.5 Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock.
Note:
The convertible top must no longer be electrically operated in this position.
CAUTION!
Danger of injury by the convertible-top mechanism!
The convertible-top rocker switch must not be actuated during the work on the convertible-top.
Remove the ignition key before starting to work on the convertible-top.
2.6 Undo the seal at the side of the roof frame (in set 1, figure 5). The seal on the roof frame consists of two parts. The lower seal must be pulled out of the profile of the retaining strip. On the upper seal with the retaining rail, unscrew the T15x9 Torx screws and remove the seal and the retaining rail from the roof frame.
2.7 Unscrew the retaining rail and the front convertible-top seal from roof frame 1 (inset 2, figure 5). Unscrew the Torx screws T25x12 from the convertible-top seal. Pull out the roof frame corners on the left and on the right to the front.
2.8 Undo the convertible-top covering at the side of the roof frame 1 (inset 3, figure 6). Unscrew the B4.8x19 sheet meal screws from the roof frame; lift the shaped sheet metal part with the convertible top covering.
2.9 Undo the convertible-top covering at the front of the roof frame 1 (inset 4, Figure 6) Detach the convertible top covering on the roof frame at the front and lay it down to the rear.
2.10 Undo the left and right front centering pegs (Figure 7).
2.11 Remove the panel (Figure 8). Unscrew the 6 T20 Torx screws from the front of the roof frame. If present, remove the felt bond at the top between roof frame 1 and the panel on the roof frame. Lift the panel up and off.
2.12 Check the upper side of the roof frame for casting residue or burrs (arrow, Figure 9). if necessary, remove by grinding or filing.
INFORMATION!
> Casting residue and burrs may also be present on roof frame 1 on vehicles with a flocked panel. As a result, the flocking may become damaged in these areas.
> If this happens the upper side of roof frame 1 should be reworked (grinding of filing away of residue). if necessary, the panel should be replaced.
> The surface should also be checked if the convertible top is being replaced.
3.0 Installing the panel and reassembling the convertible-top:
3.1 Position the 6 clips, P/N 996.561.731.00 of the new panel and turn it until the clip engages (Figure 10). Position the panel on the roof frame. Install and tighten the 6 T20 Torx screws to 2.8 Nm (2 ft.lb.).
3.2 Bond the rear upper side of the panel to roof frame 1 using a felt strip, approximately 25 mm wide placing it along the entire width of the panel Item 8.2, Figure 11). The felt strip must be flush with the rear edge.
3.3 On the upper side of the panel, cover the cut out for the convertible-top lock (Item 8.3, figure 11). Use the backing from the felt that is provided with the new panel.
3.4 Apply felt over the entire upper side of roof frame 1 and the panel. The felt film is enclosed with the new panel. Pull the Figure 11 protective backing off the adhesive side of the felt. With the help of a second person, affix the felt crease free from the rear edge of roof frame 1 over the attached felt strip on the upper side of the panel and the roof frame 1 (item 8.4, figure 12). The overlapping felt at the front edge should be cut off flush with a pair of scissors or a sharp knife.
3.5 Install the front centering pegs. Torque the T30 Torx bolts to 7Nm (5 ft-lb.).
3.6 Fasten the convertible-top covering. Pull the removed convertible top covering towards the front, positioning it correctly and laying ((fold) it creases free over the front edge of the roof frame. Press the self-adhesive strips on the convertible top material down and fasten initially with fixing clips (Inset 10, figure 13). Screw the convertible top covering into place with the sheet metal screws B4x19, starting at the rear.
3.7 Fasten the retaining rail and the convertible-top seal on roof frame, (inset 1, figure 14). Remove the fixing clips, push in the convertible top seal at the corners from the front, and fasten with the T25x12 Torx screws.
3.8 Fasten the seal at the side of the roof frame (in set 13, figure 14). The seal on the roof frame at the sides consists of two parts. Screw the up per seal to the roof frame together with a retaining rail using the T15x9 Torx screws. Press the lower seal into the profile of the retaining rail.
3.9 Move the convertible-top from the service position to its initial position. To do so fold the tension bows downward and engage the tension cable on the left and right hand sides.
