Suppressor kit for AM Reception Noise

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996)

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concern:
Radio interference/ticking noises on AM band.

Information:
As of October 20, 1998 production and the VINs listed below, the 911 Carrera (996) is fitted with an interference suppressor (in the speedometer "A" signal to the instrument cluster) to minimize the presence of audible noise with the radio on AM band. This noise is usually noticed as a ticking that increases with road speed, only when AM band is selected, and is caused by the speedometer "A" signal from the ABS system.

Suppressor installed in production from VINs:

WPOAA2 99 3 XS 62 4226 Coupe
WP0CA2 99 3 XS 65 2715 Cabriolet

On vehicles produced prior to the above listed VINs, a suppressor kit can be retrofitted for AM band ticking noise complaints. The retrofit consists of installing an "in-line" suppressor in the speed input signal to the instrument cluster.

Work Procedure:

Installation of suppressor kit.

1. Disconnect battery and cover battery terminal.

2. Remove the combination instrument cluster. Refer to 911 Carrera (996) Technical Manual, section 90 25 19.

3. Locate the blue instrument cluster connector, and unwrap approximately 60 mm of the outer insulation, starting at the plug connector.

3.1 Disassemble blue connector by lifting the tab with a small screwdriver (arrow, Figure 1). Remove contact housing from plug.

3.2 Remove the gray/pink wire (pin 13) from the connector plug by depressing tab with a small screwdriver (arrow, Figure 2). Cut off the end of the removed wire and discard terminal.

3.3 Place supplied shrink tubing over the gray/pink wire. Strip away approx. 5 mm of the insulation. Additionally strip away approximately 5 mm of the new supplied suppressor lead (the bare end without a pin)

3.4 Insert both stripped leads into the supplied metal crimping sleeve and complete connection by crimping with crimping pliers. Slide shrink tubing over connection and shrink with heat gun.

Warning!:
Observe heat gun safety instructions! Avoid damaging vehicle interior with excessive heat!

3.5 Insert new lead into the blue connector, pin 13, ensuring it properly clips into place. Reassemble the connector and re-insulate harness with insulation tape.
