Noises in the Convertible Top

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996)

Model Year:
MY 1999 (X)

Concern:
Noises in the convertible top - panel on roof frame 1.

Information:
This is a supplement to the Technical Information Gr. 6, No 1/00 dated 9-15-00 "Noises In The Convertible Top".

Complaint 11:
Severe crackling noises/clicking noises from roof frame 1 when convertible top is closed. The noise from roof frame 1 depends on the temperature and can be heard particularly when moving off from a standing position.

Cause:
The felt affixed to the underside of panel A (Figure 1) detaches at several points due to the movement against panel D. Once the felt is displaced, the contact between the two panels causes the noise.

Repair:
Panel A is now manufactured with a flocked surface. It was introduced into production on 7-17-01 from VIN 99 01S 65 0086. The part number (996.561.433.01) remains unchanged. In case of complaint, a felt lined panel should be replaced with a flocked version.
