Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 2 Signal Implausible, Short Circuit to Ground, Short Circuit to Plus.
Function:
The CMP sensor 1 signal identifies the first cylinder. If both the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor signal and the CMP sensor signal coincide, this signifies the timing point for cylinder Recognizing cylinder 1 is needed for sequential fuel injection and knock sensing.
The CMP sensor 2 is needed to identify the position of the camshaft for cylinders 4 - 6.
Diagnostic Conditions:
Engine running
Wiring Diagram:
Diagnostic Procedure:
1. Check power supply to CMP Sensor.
1. Remove connectors on CMP Sensors.
2. Switch on ignition.
3. Connect voltmeter to pin 1 (negative) and pin 3 (positive).
Specified Value: approx. 5 Volt.
2. Check power supply wiring for continuity.
1. Remove connectors on CMP Sensors.
2. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
3. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 53, and to CMP Sensor connector 1/2, pin 3.
Specified Value: 0 - 5 Ohms.
4. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 34, and CMP Sensor connector 1/2, pin 1.
Specified Value: 0 - 5 ohms.
NOTE: Perform this test for both CMP Sensors.
3. Check CMP Sensor signal.
1. Connect special tool 9616.
2. Connect engine tester. Use special input; connect positive cable to pin 21, negative cable to pin 34.
3. Start engine.
4. Check signal wire from ECM to CMP Sensors.
1. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
2. Remove connectors on CMP sensors.
3. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 21, and to CMP sensor connector 1/2, pin 2.
Specified Value: 0 - 5 Ohms.
5. Check signal wire from ECM to CMP Sensors for short circuit to ground.
1. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
2. Remove connectors on the CMP sensors.
3. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 21, and ground.
Specified Value: Infinity Ohms.
If 0 - 5 Ohms is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.
6. Check Signal wire from ECM to CMP Sensors for short circuit to B+.
1. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
2. Remove connectors on CMP sensors.
3. Connect voltmeter to special tool 9616, pin 21, and ground.
Switch on ignition.
Specified Value: 0 Volt.
If battery positive voltage is displayed, check wiring harness for chafing and pinching damage.
