Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)
Concern:
Consolidation of replacement engines
Information:
Part numbers of replacement engines have been consolidated to simplify engine ordering. Effective immediately, replacement engines for manual and Tiptronic transmission equipped vehicles is the same part number. All replacement engines for the 911 Carrera are shipped with a Tiptronic version engine harness. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the Tiptronic wiring is not used, and is tied back with tie-wraps (see repair notes).
Replacement engines are shipped with an alternator, but are not shipped with the components listed below. Therefore, the following components must be transferred from the previous engine before installation:
- Air conditioning compressor- non E-gas only.
- Polyrib drive belt
- Torque converter drive plate (Tiptronic vehicles, Figure 1)
- Dual-mass flywheel and pilot bearing (manual transmission vehicles, Figure 2)
- Clutch assembly (manual transmission vehicles, Figure 3).
Note:
Always replace the bolts for the flywheel (Part Number, 999 073 092 09 - 8 ea) and the torque converter drive plate bolts (Part Number, 999 073 091 09 - 8 ea).
- Ground strap from engine to the body. (Figure 4)
Parts Information
Notes:
1. All engines are shipped with an alternator and a Tiptronic engine harness.
2. E-gas engines are shipped with the A/C compressor.
3. All engines require that they be configured to match the respective vehicle that they are being installed in. Please see the repair notes.
Repair Notes:
Perform the following when installing a replacement engine:
All engines:
The hose leading to the secondary air pump is closed off with a plug and secured with a clamp. The plug must be removed and the hose must be connected to ensure proper secondary air operation.
Manual transmission vehicle installation:
Tie-wrap or tape the wiring for the ATF cooling switch-over (vacuum) valve to the engine wiring harness so it is out of the way.
Tiptronic vehicle installation: (non E-gas):
Remove the aluminum plug at the Y-branch (Figure 5, arrow), and insert the vacuum connection for ATF cooling in its place.
Tiptronic vehicle installation (E-gas):
Remove the aluminum plug at the X-branch (Figure 6, arrow), and insert the vacuum connection for ATF cooling in place.
