Noises from the New Style Sunroof Frame
Vehicle Type:
911 Turbo (996)/911 GT2
Model Year:
MY 2001 (1)
Concern:
Creaking noises from the frame of the sunroof with new mounting points
Information:
Due to additional body structural reinforcements in the roof, the mounting points for the sliding roof frame have changed in vehicles produced in production on 1-2-2001, from VIN 99 X1S 68 6484.
The brackets (arrow, figure 1) at the sides of the sunroof frame no longer exist (arrow, figure 2).
The movement between the new sunroof frame and the roof causes the creaking noise. To eliminate the noise, two strips of Teflon tape, one on the left and one on the right hand side were affixed to the sunroof frame. Additionally the mounting bolt torque was increased to 9.7 Nm (7.4 ft-lb).
This repair was introduced into production on 2-27-2001, as of VIN 99 61S 68 6904. Vehicles with complaints of creaking noises in the sunroof area that fall between the introduction and repair dates can be repaired by following the procedure outlined in this bulletin.
Part Information:
Part Number Description
999 911 606 40 Roll of Teflon adhesive tape, 20 mm wide (sufficient for several vehicles)
CAUTION!
There is a danger of damaging the vehicle seats when loosing the sides of the sunroof frame.
> When working on the sunroof, slide both seats back and tilt the backrest backwards.
Work Procedure:
Removing the sunroof frame and affixing the Teflon tape. Refer to Technical Manual groups 6 and 7 for the disassembly/reassemble of components.
1. Remove the sunroof panel See Technical Manual group 6, section 60 40 19.
2. Remove the sun visors - See Technical Manual group 6, section 68 23 19.
3. Remove the A-Pillar trim panel on the left and right hand sides - See Technical Manual group 7, section 70 57 19.
4. Unclip the headliner at the front and the sides - See Technical Manual group 7, section 70 84 19.
5. Remove the 4 mounting screws at the front of the sunroof frame. Refer to figure 3, picture 1 letter "A" - See Technical Manual group 6, section 60 28 19.
6. Remove the 3 mounting screws from the left side. Only loosen the screws on the right hand side. This will allow the sunroof frame to "hang" from the right side. - Refer to figure 3, picture 2, letter "B" - See Technical Manual group 6, page 3 of section 60 28 19.
7. Carefully allow the left side of the sunroof frame to drop down approximately 50 to 100 mm.
8. Affix a 320x20 mm piece of Teflon tape in the area "A" indicated in figure 4.
9. Push the left hand side of the sunroof frame up and reattach the mounting screws on the left-hand side loosely.
10. Remove the right hand screws and allow the sunroof to "hang" from the left side.
11. Carefully allow the right side of the sunroof frame to drop down approximately 50 to 100 mm
12. Install the Teflon tape on the right hand side.
13. Push the sunroof frame up and install the mounting bolts for the right side.
14. Correctly position the sunroof frame and torque all the mounting bolts to 9.7 Nm (7.4 ft-lb).
15. Re-attach the sides and front of the headliner, A-pillar trim, sun visors, and sunroof panel.
16. Re-teach the tilting/sliding roof drive. See Technical Manual group 6, section 60 14 15.
