Country Coding of the Instrument Cluster with PST2

Vehicle Type:
911 Turbo (996)

Model Year:
2002 (2)

Concern:
Incorrect fuel level reading due to a software problem with PST2 software version 13.0 or earlier.

Information:
There is a problem with software version 13.0 and earlier that will cause the fuel level gauge to give false readings when programming the Country Code in the Instrument Cluster.

The instrument cluster is programmed with the country code during production at the factory. The model specific coding may not be displayed in text, but is indicated by three dashed (- - -) lines.

If the PST2 (with software version 13.0 or lower) is used to perform "country coding" in the instrument cluster, the fuel level calculations will be adversely affected from incorrect programming. This also applies to replacement instrument clusters if being coded for the first time.

As a consequence of the incorrect programming, the needle of the fuel gauge will decrease no lower than the "2/4" position as the fuel is used up in the tank. At slightly below this fuel level, the needle will rise to the "4/4" position and remain there.

The result will be that the vehicle will run out of fuel and stop.

Other work performed on the instrument cluster, e.g. tank calibration, etc., does not lead to this fault.

It is not necessary to code the instrument cluster during the dealer PDI procedure. It is necessary, however, to code a new replacement instrument cluster with the proper country code. When the instrument cluster is coded by the workshop, the model specific information is displayed in text.

Only use PST2 software version 13.1 or higher to code a MY'02 instrument cluster.

To correct an incorrectly programmed instrument cluster, you must recode it with PST2 software version 13.1.

Work Procedure:

Reprogramming the Turbo instrument cluster with version 13.1.

1. Hook up the PST2 to the OBDII socket and switch on ignition.

2. Turn on PST2 and perform a control unit search.

3. Select "instrument cluster" from the control unit chart.

4. Within the instrument cluster, select title "Coding"

5. Select title "Country Version"

6. Select title "USA"

7. Code with function "F8"
