Turbo Charger Installation - Version Check for correct application. Porsche Owners may complain regarding engine performance during acceleration.
Information:
This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Service Action on a certain number of 2002 model year 911 Turbo (996) vehicles. Porsche AG has initiated this Service Action pertaining to the installation of the turbochargers that in some cases may be incorrect. The Part Number of each turbocharger left and right must be checked physically and visibly to determine the vehicle has the correct units installed.
Turbochargers that are found to have the incorrect part number must be replaced. Use the work procedure outlined in the Turbo Technical Manual for the replacement procedure.
Please check if you are the servicing dealer. We ask that you initiate this procedure and complete the required work on vehicles involved during their next workshop visit to your Porsche dealership.
Affected Vehicles:
A total of eight (8) U.S. vehicles fall within the scope of this Workshop Service Action. The affected Vehicle Identification Numbers are as shown.
Scope 1: Checking Part Numbers of both turbochargers, no action is necessary
Scope 2: Checking Part Numbers of both turbochargers and replacing one turbocharger
Scope 3: Checking Part Nos. of both turbochargers and replacing both turbochargers
Important!
Upon making contact with the customer, please order all parts and have on-hand before the vehicle comes to the shop.
Should it turn out that the parts are not required , we will accept them back if the package is unopened.
Part Numbers:
Use the chart shown to order the parts necessary for the corresponding scope of repair.
Tools:
For check (scope 1): Flashlight and a mirror.
CAUTION!
Danger of burns.
> Parts of the exhaust system can be extremely hot. Do not begin work until the exhaust system has cooled down.
Work Procedure:
Checking the part numbers.
Scope 1.
1. Raise the vehicle with the lifting platform.
2. Clean the identification plate (see arrows, figure 1) on both the exhaust turbochargers and then read off each of the Part Numbers using a flashlight and a mirror.
The correct part numbers are as follows:
Left turbocharger: 996 123 013 75 (incorrect part number 996 123 983 71)
Right turbocharger: 996 123 014 75 (incorrect part number 996 123 984 71)
3. If the correct turbochargers (Part No. 996 123 013 75/996 123 014 75) have been installed in the vehicle, no further action is necessary.
Replacing one or both turbochargers.
Scope 2 and 3.
1. If one or two incorrect turbochargers have been installed in the vehicle, the relevant exhaust turbocharger(s) must be replaced.
2. Remove rear spoiler (Bumper cover). --> See Technical Manual, 635519 (63-4, page 1)
3. Remove the accessories of the rear spoiler (including the rear end, center heat shield and the bumpers) --> see Technical Manual, Rep. Gr. 635519 (63-6, page 1).
4. Replace the turbocharger(s) according to Technical Manual, Rep. Gr. 213019 (21-2, page 1).
Important!
During installation, make sure that the lower center heat shield is positioned correctly according to the specifications in the Technical Manual, Rep. Gr. 635019 (Removing and installing rear bumper).
5. Enter the campaign into the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
6. Return the removed turbochargers to PCNA. Use the following address:
