Work Procedure
1. Removing spoiler from rear lid.1.1 Unscrew screws (A) and remove spoiler.
1.2 Unscrew screws (B) and remove retainer plates.
2. Painting the spoiler lip, rear lid, rear wing, retainer plates (2x), additional spoiler lip and cover trim for installation opening of additional brake light - refer to Paint Manual.
Note:
The adhesive film remains on the spoiler lip when painting.
3. Fitting the spoiler lip.
3.1 Position vehicle on lifting platform and raise.
3.2 Unscrew screws (A) and unclip standard spoiler lip (B) from front spoiler.
3.3 Remove adhesive film from the new spoiler lip.
3.4 Clip the new spoiler lip, from the inside out starting in the middle into the front spoiler and tighten the screws (A).
3.5 Lower the vehicle to working height with the lifting platform.
4. Removing standard rear lid - see Technical Manual.
5. Removing additional brake light.
5.1 Remove cover cap (A).
5.2 Turn lock (B) approx. 90° and fold the additional brake light to the side out of the holder.
5.3 Disconnect plug (C) and remove additional brake light.
Note: Fasten wiring harness permanently with adhesive tape in installation slot.
6. Install additional brake light cover trim.
6.1 Only for vehicles as of model year '04.
6.1.1 Clip in cover trim for installation opening of additional brake light.
6.2 Only for vehicles up to model year '04.
6.2.1 Cut off all lugs (A) of the cover trim.
6.2.2 Apply adhesive compound (B) in the border area of the installation opening for additional brake light and insert cover trim.
Note: Select the size of the adhesive bead so that after pressing on the cover trim, any remaining adhesive is not visible from the outside.
6.2.3 Fasten cover trim with adhesive tape.
7. Fitting tear-off edge.
7.1 Clean grease and dust off the bonding surface using a cleaning cloth. Afterwards do not touch the bonding surface.
7.2 Remove protective backing from adhesive strips.
7.3 Align the additional spoiler lip (A) so that the contours (B) fit perfectly against the rear lid.
Note:
Dimension "X" is measured at the reinforcement rib of the ventilation slots.
Dimension "X" is measured from the outer edge of the rear lid to the tear-off edge.
7.4 Press tear-off edge into place.
8. Disassembling standard rear lid.
8.1 Remove reflector cover, fan with fan housing, upper part of lock and air guide - refer to Technical Manual.
9. Fitting rear lid.
9.1 Position retainer plates (A) on rear lid and tighten screws (B).
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.).
Note:
Insert screws with securing compound.
9.2 Position spoiler (A) on holder (B) and tighten screws (C).
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.).
Note:
Use micro-encapsulated bolts from retrofit kit.
9.3 Insert electrical wiring harness into rear lid.
9.4 Connect plug and insert additional brake light into rear lid.
Note:
Ensure correct seating of the rubber seal.
9.5 Turn lock approx. 90° and attach cover cap for additional brake light.
9.6 Insert fan with fan housing (A) and tighten screws (B).
9.7 Tighten wiring harness with clips (C) to rear lid and connect both plugs.
9.8 Clip in air guide (D).
Note:
Pay attention to identification markings.
9.9 Position reflector cover and tighten screws (A).
Tightening torque: 4 Nm (3 ftlb.)
Note:
To avoid warping, tighten screws outwards from the inside.
9.10 Attach rubber seal (B).
9.10.1 Clean grease and dust off the bonding surface using a cleaning cloth. Afterwards do not touch the bonding surface.
9.10.2 Remove protective backing from adhesive strips.
9.10.3 Align the rubber seal (B) so that the contours (C) fit perfectly against the rear lid and the water drain holes (D) are not covered.
9.10.4 Press rubber seal into place.
9.11 Twist off collar (A) from the rubber buffer and press into rear lid.
Note:
Ensure that the twist lock (B) is seated correctly.
9.12 Screw rubber buffer into collar.
10. Position upper part of lock and tighten screws.
11. Mount the rear lid on the vehicle.
12. For adjusting rear lid and if necessary, aligning rear lights - see Technical Manual.
13. Stick on a warning label.
Note:
Order the "coolant cap" warning label separately using Part Number 996 006 120 00 as needed.
14. Functional inspections.
14.1 Check additional brake light for correct functioning.
14.2 Check fan with PST2.
14.2.1 Carry out "Engine compartment purge fan" drive-link test.
Note:
When the engine compartment purge fan is functioning correctly and its direction of movement is correct, a piece of paper, held over the ventilation slots of the rear lid, will be pulled against them by suction.
