Checking Crankcase For Tightness - Flywheel Side
Checking crankcase for tightness - flywheel side
Caution
When working on the engine, absolute cleanliness is essential. Even the smallest particles of dirt can damage engine components.
Information
- The test can be performed on the installed unit only in the case of Tiptronic vehicles up to and including model year 2001, since it is not possible to remove and install the Tiptronic transmission reliably on vehicles from subsequent model years and Porsche AG thus has not approved repair.
- In the case of vehicles with manual transmission, the test is generally possible on the installed engine.
- The description serves to carry out a defined leakage search in the area of joint, crankshaft sealing ring, bearing cover intermediate shaft and encapsulated screw connections.
Requirement: transmission, clutch, flywheel or drive plate for torque converter removed (depending on the vehicle in question)
1. Thoroughly clean sealing zones with brake cleaner, acetone or solvent naphtha.
2. Then coat with talcum powder or spray with leak-locating spray (Spot check).
3. Fit the flywheel (also possible with Tiptronic up to MY 2001).
Information
- Lower vehicle on the lifting platform to warm up the engine.
- If the vehicle is placed on its wheels or moved in the workshop, it is essential to mount the rear-axle carrier because the axle alignment values could change otherwise.
- Important! Allow engine to cool down sufficiently following the warm-up.
4. Warm up engine (running time 30-40 minutes). After it has reached operating temperature, bring engine up to different rpm ranges several times by pushing the accelerator pedal.
5. Then allow engine to cool down again.
6. Remove flywheel, localize any leakages.
7. In case of leakages, carry out appropriate repair measure, otherwise complete vehicle.
