New Drive Shafts - Notes

New drive shafts - notes

The following changes apply to the 911 Carrera/911 Carrera 4/911 Carrera 4S (but not to the GT3/GT2/911 Turbo).

As of the current '02 model, light-weight monobloc drive shafts -B- are being used instead of friction-welded drive shafts -A- in all 911 Carrera (996) models with manual and Tiptronic transmission. Drive shafts -A and B- differ with regard to dimensions -1 and 2- while dimension -3- is the same in both drive shafts.

Manual transmissions and Tiptronic drive shafts also differ with regard to length in both the monobloc version -A- and the friction-welded version -B-. To distinguish between the two, new drive shafts are labelled accordingly.

Repairs

The friction-welded drive shafts are still available. When replacements are required, the friction-welded drive shafts are to be installed up to the time that monobloc drive shafts are introduced (in the current '02 model).

The fastening screws (generally M10) differ with regard to length.
