Coding
The following coding options are available under the menu item "Coding":
Menu item Function
- Country coding Selection for following country codings: USA, RoW, UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Japan
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "Country coding"
- Select the respective country and code with [F8] key
- PSM It is possible to code the instrument cluster under this menu item after replacing the instrument cluster.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item "PSM"
- Select the respective menu item with / without PSM and code with [F8] key
- Air conditioning Under this menu item, it is possible to code the instrument cluster after replacing the instrument cluster or retrofitting an air conditioning system.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item "Air conditioning"
- Select the respective menu item with / without air conditioning and code with [F8] key
- Cruise control This menu item enables the instrument cluster to be coded after replacing the instrument cluster or after retrofitting a cruise-control actuator.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "Cruise control"
- Select the respective menu item with / without cruise-control actuator and code with [F8] key
- On-board computer This menu item enables the instrument cluster to be coded after replacing the instrument cluster or after retrofitting an on-board computer.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item "On-board computer"
- Select the respective menu item with / without on-board computer and code with [F8] key
- Vehicle identification It is possible to enter the Vehicle
Number Ident. No. underthis menu item after replacing the instrument cluster.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "Vehicle Ident. No."
- Enter Vehicle Ident. No and code with [F8] Key
- Activate instrument This menu item enables the instrument
cluster cluster to be activated or deactivated. The deactivated instrument cluster is set to the low-current mode (production mode) and can be automatically activated under the menu item "Vehicle hand-over".
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "Activate instrument cluster"
- Select the desired coding and code with [F8] key.
- Time Time entry option
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "Time"
- Enter the time and code with [F8] key.
- Synchronise K-number Under this menu item, it is possible to synchronise the K-number after replacing the instrument cluster or PCM.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "Synchronise K-number".
- The Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 automatically controls the rest of the process.
- The following displays appear:
- K-number updated
- Connecting to PCM
- K-number updated in PCM
- Connecting to instrument cluster
- Function successfully completed
- Oil level characteristics Under this menu item, it is possible to adapt the instrument cluster software to the reduced engine oil quantity (approx, 0.5 litre) after replacing the instrument cluster.
- Connect the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588, switch on the ignition and start the automatic control module search
- Select vehicle type 911 (996) and instrument cluster control module
- Select menu item Coding
- Select menu item "New oil level characteristics"
- The characteristics (old/new oil level characteristics) currently stored in the instrument cluster are displayed under "Oil level characteristics". If "New oil level characteristics" is displayed, the characteristics in the instrument cluster have already been programmed. Return to the start menu with [ESC]
- Select menu item "Oil level characteristics" and start the function with [>>].
- The following note is displayed on the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588: "The new oil level characteristics may only be used in conjunction with the new oil dipstick. Continue with EJ".
- Select menu item "New oil level characteristics" and change the coding with [F8]. After coding has been successfully completed, "New oil level characteristics" is displayed in the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588.
- Function successfully completed
NOTE:
- Synchronise K-number
- As of model year '02, the tolerance of the speed display has been restricted. This was achieved by changing the software "K-number" in the instrument cluster and PCM control module. The "K-number" varies depending on vehicle type and country equipment.

- Old/new oil level characteristics
- In order to eliminate the "blue smoke" problem, it is necessary to reduce the engine oil quantity by approx. 0.5 litre and to replace the oil dipstick with a modified version for vehicles up to model year '02 that were manufactured prior to 8 January 2002.
