Front Axle Differential Noises
Date: 8-22-03
Vehicle Type:
911 Turbo (996)
Model Year:
As of '03 (3)
Concern:
The front-axle differential makes noises in 4th, 5th and 6th gears when the vehicle is accelerated under a slight load in vehicles equipped with manual transmission and Michelin 18" tires.
Information:
The noises can occur when the vehicle is accelerated in 4th, 5th and 6th gears in the speed range from 30 to 50 mph (50 to 80 km/h) (1,000 to 2,000 rpm). This is caused by rolling tolerances of the front wheels in relation to the rear wheels in combination with 18" Michelin tires (Pilot Sport 1.5; Porsche specification N1), which can cause "rattling" of the front-axle differential on vehicles equipped with manual transmission.
There is no fault in the powertrain.
The front-axle differential is not faulty.
These noises neither lead to any damage, nor do they represent any damage to the vehicle.
There is no defect in terms of the warranty!
Affected Vehicles:
All new vehicles as of production week 14/03 (date: 04-01-2003) with 18" Michelin tires. All vehicles equipped with 18" Michelin tires in a tire change.
