W414 - Updating Software in DME Control Unit
(Workshop Service Action)
Vehicle Type:
911 GT3 (996)
Model Year:
MY 2004 (4)
Concern:
DME Control Unit Programming
Information:
This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Service Action on certain 2004 model year 911 GT3 (996) vehicles. Due to a software error in the DME control unit, it is possible that the DME control module changes to a limited operating program when driving in the lower part-load range in high altitudes.
Carrying out a reset (switching the ignition off and on) can be used to end the limited operating program. However, there is the possibility that the error will occur again if the vehicle is moved under the abovementioned operating conditions.
Therefore, we ask that the software version on the DME control unit of the affected vehicles listed below be updated during the Porsche Owner's next visit to your workshop.
Affected Vehicles:
A total of 271 U.S. and 16 Canadian vehicles fall within the scope of this Service Action.
Very Important! Not every vehicle in the below listed range may be affected. Use the ranges below as a general guideline. The VIN can also be checked via VRU (Voice Response System) for any open listing.
Refer to Attachment "A" to determine if a particular vehicle is eligible for this service action. Alternatively, the VIN can be checked in the Porsche e-DCS/WWS for confirmation of an open service action.
The affected Vehicle Identification Numbers are contained in the following VIN-Ranges:
Work Procedure:
See Attachment "B"
Time Allowance:
40 TU, Reprogramming the DME control module. This includes reading out fault memory and erasing it if necessary.
Tools:
Porsche System Tester (PST2 or PIWIS tester) with test software version 22.0/01/2004 or higher
The DME reprogramming code for the relevant vehicle must be available!
(File PTEC Request through AfterSales Technical Support Group to obtain correct code)
Parts Required:
Attachment "A"
Attachment "B"
Work Procedure:
Program the DME control unit with new software version.
Caution
The programming operation must not be interrupted. The electrical system battery must be connected to a suitable battery charger with a rated current of at least 40 A.
> If there is an interruption due to a voltage drop while programming, malfunctions in the DME control unit cannot be ruled out.
1. Connect charger to the electrical system battery and switch on.
2. Connect the Porsche System Jester 2 (or PIWIS tester) having test software 22.0/01/2004 (or higher) to the diagnostic plug and switch on. The procedure for the PST2 is described below.
3. Switch on ignition.
4. Using the PST2, select "control module search" in the "Control Modules" menu. Read out fault memory, faulty entries regarding the DME control module are to be ignored. If other faults are stored in the memory, these must be located and eliminated according to OBD Manual II.
This work can not be invoiced under the workshop campaign number W414, but must be submitted with a separate warranty claim. After remedying the faults and deleting the fault memory, continue with Step 5.
5. Program the DME control unit according to the Technical Manual Group 2, Chapter 24 70 19. Note: If the PIWIS tester is used for programming, there is the possibility the screen saver (black screen) will be activated while programming. Programming will not be affected by this, and the screen saver can be deactivated by touching the touch screen.
6. Using the PST2, select "Control module search" in the "Control modules" menu. Fault memory entries of the control modules that are due to DME programming (CAN DME timeout or the like) according to OBD II Manual.
7. Return to the start menu.
8. Switch off and disconnect the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2).
9. Switch off the ignition.
10. Switch off the charger and disconnect.
11. Enter the campaign into the Maintenance Manual.
