Short Shift Kit Installation Instructions

Note
This Technical information replaces Technical Information No. 5/03 dated October 24, 2003.

As of 2001 up to 2005

Restriction:
NOT for vehicles with Tiptronic transmission (I No. 249)

Note:
Shortening of shift travel will Shorten the shift travel by up to 35%. This results in even more precise shift operations as well as a even sportier driving experience thanks to perfect shift control.

The setup for shortening the shift travel consists of a modified gearshift lever (precision milling part) and two new plastic bearings.





The Porsche logo can be seen on the gearshift lever when removed.

Tools

Assembly:

1. Preparatory work

1.1 Remove center console --> POSES, workshop Manual, Serv. No. 6817. "Removing center console".

1.2 Remove gearshift bracket.

1.2.1 Put gearshift lever in neutral.





1.2.2 Remove locking clips --> Figure 3 -A- on support --> Figure 3 -B-.

1.2.3 Pull support --> Figure 3 -B- upwards out of the gearshift bracket.





Note
Do not loosen the locking sleeves --> figure 4 -A- of the shift and selector cable.

1.2.4 Lever off shift cable --> Figure 4 -B- at the gear shift lever

To do this, insert a large screwdriver through the side opening in the gearshift bracket and press end of shift cable down off the ball head.

1.2.5 Remove protective cap --> Figure 4 -C- and pull off selector cable --> Figure 4 -D-.





1.2.6 Unscrew nuts --> Figure 5 -A- and remove gearshift bracket.

2. Remove long gearshift lever (standard version).

DANGER
Risk of accidents (eye injuries) while removing the gearshift lever.
^ Wear protective goggles when knocking off the pins at the bushings (plastic)!





2.1 Knock off pin --> Figure 6 -A- at the bushings (plastic) with a chisel.

2.2 Remove bushings from the gearshift bracket --> Figure 6 -Arrows-.

2.3 Guide gearshift lever --> Figure 6 -B- upwards out of the gearshift bracket.





3. Check whether a green clip --> Figure 7 -Section- is installed on the base of the gearshift bracket.

3.1 If you see a green clip:

Press green clip downwards --> Figure 7 -Arrow A- and unclip it towards the front --> Figure 7 -Arrow B- out of the gearshift bracket.

Background:

If the clip remains in the gearshift bracket, the shift cables will rub against the clip.

3.2 If there is no green clip:

Continue with the next step.

4. Install short gearshift lever.

4.1 Lightly lubricate pin and ball pin on the new gearshift lever using approx. 3 g of lubricant.





4.2 Guide gearshift lever into the gearshift bracket --> Figure 8 -A-.

4.3 Position new bushing on gearshift bracket in such a way that the two pins stand vertically at the base of the bushing --> Figure 8 -D- and one groove in the bushing is aligned with the bar --> Figure B -A, Arrow- in the gearshift bracket.

4.4 Carefully press the bushing into the gearshift bracket using a vice --> Figure 8 -B-. When doing this, ensure that the gearshift lever pin is positioned in the bushing and the base of the bushing in flush with the --> Figure 8 -D- gearshift bracket.

4.5 Press the second bushing into the gearshift bracket in the same way --> Figure 8 -B-.

4.6 Check that the new gearshift lever moves smoothly in the bushing.

5. Concluding work:

5.1 Install gearshift bracket.





5.1.1 Insert the gearshift bracket and tighten nuts --> Figure 9 -A-.

Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 lb-ft.)





5.1.2 Grease and attach selector cable --> Figure 10 -A-, then install protective cap --> Figure 10 -B-.

5.1.3 Grease and install shift cable --> Figure 10 -C-. To do this, insert a large screwdriver through the side opening in the gearshift bracket and press end of shift cable on to the ball head.

5.1.4 Insert support --> Figure 10 -D- in gearshift bracket and secure with locking clips --> Figure 10 -E-.

5.2 Check shifting in all gears.

5.3 Install center console --> POSES, Workshop Manual Serv. No. 6817. "Installing center console".

5.4 Test drive.
