Installing Camshaft Housing

Installing camshaft housing
Refer to tools and tightening torques in Chapter "Removing camshaft housing"!

1. Replace seals. Replace the seals between the chain box/camshaft housing and the cylinder head/camshaft housing seal. The embossed recesses in the seal must face the cylinder head.
2. Place the camshaft housing in position. Carefully put the camshaft housing on in a straight line. When doing so, make sure that the flat-based tappet guides are not damaged.

Note:
^ If screws of strength class 8.8 have been installed, these must be replaced by screws of strength class 10.9.

3. Mount the 18 hexagon-head bolts. The bolts are tightened in two stages in the order specified.
^ Initial tightening: 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
^ Final tightening: 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.)

4. Insert flat-based tappets. Spread a thin coat of clean engine oil on the flat-base tappets. Do not interchange the flat-base tappets. In the case of the flat-base tappets for the inlet camshaft, make sure that the feather keys are positioned in the grooves in the flat-base tappet housing.
5. Subsequently install the camshafts.
