Replacing Convertible-top Covering With Glass Rear Window

Removing convertible-top covering
INFORMATION:
- The following convertible-top covering spare parts are required for replacement of the convertible-top covering.
- The spare parts contained in the convertible-top covering scope of parts must always be replaced.
- The convertible-top covering must be replaced at a room temperature of at least 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit).
- The roof liner must be removed when replacing the convertible-top covering on the model version with roof liner.
- The centre cover moulding is characterized by a second groove for the connection to the roof liner which must be ordered separately.
1. Detaching retaining rail and convertible top seal on the roof frame
1.1. Unscrew the fastening screws -1- from the retaining rail -2- or the fastening screws from the left and right of the convertible-top seal -3-.
1.2. Pull out the convertible-top seal corners on the left and on the right to the front.
2. Detaching seal at sides of roof frame
2.1. The seal on the roof frame consists of two parts.
2.2. Pull the lower seal -4- out of the profile of the retaining strip -5-.
2.3. Unscrew the top seal fastening screws -6- from the retaining rail -5- and remove the convertible-top seal -3- and the retaining rail -5- from the roof frame.
2.4. Remove the additional seal -7-.
3. Detaching shaped sheetmetal part with convertible-top covering
3.1. Undo the fastening screws -8- on the roof frame and raise the shaped sheetmetal part together with the convertible-top covering -9-.
4. Detaching convertible-top covering at the roof frame
4.1. Detach the convertible-top covering -9- on the roof frame at the front and lay it down to the rear.
5. Detaching rubber section and convertible-top covering on tension bow
5.1. Pull the rubber section -10- out of the profile strip of the tension bow -11- and detach the convertible-top end piece -12- from the tension bow.
6. Pulling off additional seal
6.1. Pull the additional seal -13- out of the lower groove of the tension bow -11-, pull the seal -14- on the convertible-top covering out of the upper groove of the tension bow and pull the convertible-top covering down and off.
7. Removing cable of the convertible-top covering
7.1. At the front B-pillar (main bow), undo the fastening screw -15- from the cable eye -16- and clamping rail -17-. Unscrew fastening screw -15- and remove the friction plate -18-.
8. Detaching fold at the rear sides
8.1. Undo the fold of the convertible-top covering edge in -direction of the arrow-.
8.2. Pull the convertible-top covering out of the clamping rails -17- at the bottom sides.
8.3. Unscrew the fastening screw -19- at the rear of the clamping rail.
9. Removing clamping rail and slider
9.1. Press the plastic plugs -20- in the clamping rail out of the main bow from the inside.
9.2. Pull clamping rail with slider out of the main bow at the top and bottom.
10. Detaching holding strap of the convertible-top covering
10.1. Open the velcro fastening -23- of the holding strap.
CAUTION: Unplugging connectors on the rear window.
- Carefully pull off the plug connector.
11. Disconnecting electrical plug connection to the rear window.
11.1. Carefully pull plug connector -25- left and right out of plug -24- on the rear window.
12. Unclipping the fold layer.
12.1. Hold clips -26- in direction of arrow and pull out fold layer -27-.
13. Removing the fold layer.
13.1. Pull fold layer -27- out of the tension strap in -direction of arrow- on left and right.
14. Detaching convertible-top covering at the main and corner bows.
14.1. Pull the convertible-top covering from the groove of the main bow -29- and the cover strip -28-.
Installing the convertible-top covering
INFORMATION:
- All pins and screw joints must be checked for tightness before the convertible-top covering is installed. Refer to Replacing convertible-top frame.
- If the convertible-top covering is very taut (with new convertible-top covering), close the convertible top and heat the convertible-top covering evenly using a heating lamp.
- Ensure that the convertible-top covering is not heated for longer than 1 hour.
- Maintain a safe distance from the heating lamp of approx. 50 cm, then leave the vehicle overnight with the convertible top closed.
- For the convertible top to close correctly it is essential that the convertible top gear is set at the basic adjustment. Refer to Adjusting convertible top gear.
1. Preparing convertible-top frame and convertible-top covering
1.1. Measure the centre between the restraining straps and mark it on the tension bow.
1.2. Replace the seals contained in the scope of parts on the left and right of the roof frame, and replace the centre cover moulding.
1.3. Replace the tension strap. Refer to Replacing convertible-top frame - for convertible top covering with glass window.
2. Installing the fold layer.
2.1. Insert fold layer -27- into the tension strap in -direction of arrow- on left and right. Make sure that the fold layer is routed above the push bar. For an illustration of the push bar, refer to Procedure No. 10 Fastening holding strap of the convertible-top covering.
3. Clipping in fold layer
3.1. Press fold layer -27- into clips -26- in -direction of arrow-.
4. Pulling convertible-top covering in at the main bow
4.1. Lay the convertible-top covering on the convertible-top frame, fit the front tightening strip of the convertible-top covering in the groove of the cover moulding -28- and fit and centre the rear tightening strip in the groove of the main bow -29-.
5. Fastening the convertible-top covering at the sides of the roof frame
5.1. Lay the convertible-top covering -9- to the front and guide the shaped sheet metal part into the roof frame from above.
5.2. Fasten the convertible-top covering with the fastening screws -8-, starting from the rear bottom side of the roof frame.
6. Fastening convertible-top covering at front
6.1. A cardboard strip and a self-adhesive strip are affixed at the front of the convertible-top covering.
6.2. Pull the protective paper off the adhesive tape and fold the convertible-top material around the roof frame into the groove without wrinkles.
6.3. The fold is initially held with fixing clips.
7. Fastening the retaining rail and convertible-top seal on the roof frame
7.1. Remove the fixing clips and clip the convertible-top seal -3- into the roof frame at the corners from the front in -direction of the arrow-.
7.2. Fasten the retaining rail -2- at the front on the roof frame -1- using the fastening screws.
8. Fastening seal at the sides of the roof frame
8.1. Affix the additional seal -7-.
8.2. The seal on the roof frame at the sides consists of two parts.
8.3. Screw the upper seal -6- and retaining strip -5- to the roof frame using the fastening screws. Make sure that the additional seal is clamped under the retaining strip.
8.4. Press the lower seal -4- into the profile of the retaining strip -5-.
CAUTION: Unplugging connectors on the rear window.
- Carefully push on the plug connector.
9. Connecting electrical plug connection to the rear window.
9.1. Carefully push plug connector -25- left and right onto plug -24- on the rear window.
10. Fastening holding strap of the convertible-top covering
10.1. Guide the Velcro seal -23- around the push bar and close.
11. Pulling pull strip into the clamping rail
11.1. Pull the horizontal pull strip of the convertible-top covering -9- into the groove of the clamping rail -17- in -direction of the arrow-.
11.2. Fold the cardboard insert underneath around the clamping rail.
11.3. Secure the clamping rail -17- with the fastening screw -19-.
12. Fitting the clamping rail with slider
12.1. Pull the vertical pull strip of the convertible-top covering into the slider -22- in -direction of the arrow-. Then turn inwards and together with the clamping rail -17- press into the main bow.
13. Securing the clamping rail
13.1. The clamping rail is secured by pressing the plastic plugs -20- into the clamping rail from the inside.
14. Fastening cable of the convertible-top covering
14.1. Position the cable -16- with the clamping rail -17- at the B-pillar (main bow). Secure the clamping rail with the friction plate -18- and the fastening screw -15-.
15. Fastening convertible-top covering at the sides
15.1. Clamp the outer pull strip of the convertible-top covering behind the leaf spring.
16. Fastening convertible-top covering on the tension bow
16.1. Press the centre of the convertible-top covering -9- that coincides with the marking on the tension bow into the upper groove of the tension bow -11-.
16.2. Centre the middle of the seal -14- and tap into the groove of the tension bow -11-.
17. Fitting additional seal
17.1. Insert the tension bow seal -11- into the centered groove of the tension bow -14- in -direction of the arrow-.
18. Fastening convertible-top covering end-piece on the tension bow
18.1. Apply adhesive over approx. 300 mm on the left and right sides of the convertible-top covering end piece and fold over the tension bow.
19. Fitting tension bow seal
19.1. Press the tension bow seal -10- into the outer groove of the tension bow -11-.
