Camshaft Guide:

Checking the timing

ATTENTION: Engine damage due to turning the crankshaft against the running direction (engine assembled)!
--> Never turn the engine against the running direction when the timing drive mechanism is fitted (timing chain may jump over).
--> Proceed carefully while working as otherwise engine damage may occur.
--> Only turn the engine on the crankshaft and never on the camshaft as the timing chain can jump over.
--> After working on the camshaft timing gears, the timing must be adjusted.
--> Please observe the general warning notes and working regulations --> '10 The most important working regulations and warning notes'

Note: The engine does not have to be removed in order to check the timing!

TDC Of Cylinder 1:

1. Turn the crankshaft using the belt pulley fastening screw in the direction of rotation of engine (clockwise) until the markings on the pulley and on the crankcase coincide -arrow- (crankshaft in TDC of cylinder 1).

Camshaft Guide:

2. Insert camshaft guide T10068 into both grooves of the camshafts -A-. Make sure that the four cams of cylinder 1 are up at the same time (compression TDC).

Positioning Camshaft Adjusters:

Note: If the camshaft guide T10068 cannot be inserted into the grooves of the camshafts, either the crankshaft must be turned by a further full rotation in the direction of rotation of the engine, or the tolerance in the timing chain must be taken into account. In the latter case, the crankshaft must be turned to approximately 5 mm above the marking.

3. If the crankshaft pulley is positioned at the TDC marking and the camshaft guide T10068 is inserted into the grooves of the camshafts, the position of the camshaft adjusters must still be checked. The arrows -A and B- on the camshaft adjusters must match the notches -arrows- on the timing chain housing -C-.
4. The distance between tooth -1- and tooth -2- of the camshaft adjusters must be exactly 16 rolls of the camshaft chain tensioner.

Subsequent work

1. If the markings do not match, the timing must be set.
2. If the timing is OK, install cylinder head cover.
