Component Overview Of Valve-Stem Guide:

Checking valve-stem guide (valve tilt clearance)

1. Turn cylinder head around so that the compression chamber is visible.

ATTENTION: Damage to engine due to dirt particles!
--> Proceed carefully while working as otherwise the engine can be damaged.
--> Ensure everything is clean when working on the engine. Even the smallest particles of dirt can block up oil bores.

Note: Observe the most important working regulations and warning notes
--> '10 The most important working regulations and warning notes'.

2. Attach gauge holder VW 387-1- to cylinder head. Fasten fitting gauge in gauge holder VW 387 with measuring tip.

Note:
^ A new valve must be used for the test.
^ Intake valves and exhaust valves have different shank diameters. The fitting new valve must be used for checking the respective valve guide.

3. Insert new valve into valve guide from the combustion chamber. Push in until the valve stem end is flush with the valve guide.

4. Engage measuring tip tightly on the side of the valve disc and tilt valve to and fro in the valve guide -see arrow-.
5. If the tilt play is greater than 0.8 mm, the cylinder head must be replaced.
