Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
Removing and installing sealing ring for crankshaft flywheelRequired tools
Removing crankshaft sealing ring on flywheel side
Note:
^ The description relates to one drive plate.
^ In the manual transmission version, the double-mass flywheel must be removed and installed in accordance with the corresponding description.
1. Remove transmission.
2. Block drive plate. To do this, attach toothed segment P201 a to a screw hole in the crankcase so that at least one tooth is in contact with the starter teeth. Off washer (approximately 5 mm) must be placed under the segment.
3. Unscrew drive plate. To do this, loosen the ten diagonally opposite fastening screws.
4. Remove drive plate.
Note:
^ If a crankshaft is dirty or slightly rusted, this will damage the new sealing ring when it is fitted.
^ The crankshaft stub must be cleaned before the old sealing ring is removed so that no particles of dirt can reach the engine.
^ Use a metal-polishing pad (e.g. Never Dull) for this.
5. Clean the crankshaft stub. The crankshaft stub must not be dirty or rusty. If necessary, clean it with brake cleaner and grind off any rust with a metal-polishing pad (e.g. Never Dull).
6. Using the special tool, drift punch (1-mm tip) 167, beat a small hole into a non-rubberized spot (rectangular window in the ring) of the sealing ring.
7. Screw in the extractor tip. Knock out the extractor tip using slide hammer kit 168 in conjunction with the sealing ring.

5. Position the pressure piece and use a rubber hammer to tap evenly around the edges of the pressure piece until it is fitted evenly all round.
6. Remove pressure piece and assembly sleeve.
7. Fit drive plate.
8. Block drive plate. To do this, attach toothed segment 9538/1 to a screw hole in the crankcase so that at least one tooth is in contact with the starter teeth.
