Fault Code 1236

Fault code 1236

Shiftlock solenoid

NOTE: The ignition must be switched off and then switched on again in order to display an error message in the instrument cluster.

Use the 'Actual values' menu in the 9588 Porsche System Tester II to check the transmission status and the actual values of the shift solenoid valves and sensors.

Diagnostic conditions
- Ignition on or engine running
- Internal Tiptronic control module function test

Checking shiftlock function:
Shiftlock prevents the selector lever shifting out of the positions 'P' and 'N' when the foot brake is not actuated. Shiftlock is enabled when switching on the ignition.

Test procedure:
- 1. Ignition switched on
- 2. Foot brake not actuated
- 3. Try to move the selector lever from position 'P'
- 4. It must not be possible to move the selector lever
- 5. Actuate foot brake
- 6. The selector lever must release

'Rocking free' test procedure:
- 1. Ignition switched on
- 2. Foot brake not actuated
- 3. Move selector lever from 'R - N - D' and back within '2 seconds'
- 4. The selector lever must not lock
- 5. Foot brake not actuated
- 6. Leave selector lever for approx. '3 seconds' in position 'N'
- 7. The selector lever must lock in position 'N'

Possible causes of fault

NOTE:
The 'Diagnosis/troubleshooting' shown below is adapted to suit the fault type displayed in the tester (please note fault type numbering 1, 2,... etc..). The fault memory Info key [F8] on the 9588 Porsche System Tester II can be used to read out the fault type in the 'extended fault memory'.
- 1. 'Open circuit/short circuit to B+': In the event of short circuit to B+, shiftlock solenoid permanently activated
- 1. 'Open circuit/short circuit to B+': In the event of open circuit, shiftlock solenoid not activated
- 2. 'Short circuit to ground': In the event of short circuit to ground, shiftlock solenoid not activated

Affected pins
Tiptronic control module plug:
- Pin 29 'shiftlock solenoid', to selector lever switch 'pin A5'
- Pin 49 'stop light switch'

Wiring diagram of shiftlock solenoid

1 - Tiptronic control module
2 - Shiftlock solenoid
29 - Pin (29)
I - Current flow

Data on Shiftlock solenoid
- Operating voltage (max.): up to 16.5 V
- Current input (max.): 1.2 A (at 16.5 V)
- Default internal resistance (at 20 °C): 21.2 ± 0.7 Ohms
- Default internal resistance (at -40 °C): 15.8 Ohms

NOTE:
Visual inspection: In the next troubleshooting section, please check first that the affected 'pins' on the Tiptronic control module plug connection and the 'pins' on the 'existing transmission wiring' plug connection are neither damaged nor corroded. Remove any soiling or corrosion/oxidation. Replace damaged parts/wires.

NOTE:
Control unit replacement: Before replacing the 'Tiptronic control unit', the ground connections, power supply and plug connections on the control unit must be checked as OK. Please observe the coding of the control module. After the test drive, read out the fault memory with the 9588 Porsche System Tester II again. Additional causes of faults that could damage the 'Tiptronic control module' should be detected and remedied.

1. Troubleshooting only for fault type: 'Open circuit/short circuit to B+'

NOTE: The P/N lock solenoid is protected by fuse '52' in the fuse carrier at the right of the dashboard. This fuse should be checked for continuity and replaced if not OK.

2. Troubleshooting only for fault type: 'Short circuit to ground'

NOTE: The P/N lock solenoid is protected by fuse '52' in the fuse carrier at the right of the dashboard. This fuse should be checked for continuity and replaced if not OK.
