Removing the coolant expansion tank

Note:
^ The car should be allowed to cool down before this work is commenced.
^ Please observe general warning notes.

1. Position vehicle on lifting platform.

Caution: Danger of scalding!
^ Never open the cooling system when it is hot. Any escaping coolant may be very hot and can cause scalding.
^ The cooling system must be depressurize before being opened.






2. Open maintenance cover.





3. Carefully open the cap on the coolant expansion tank. Unscrew the cap in counterclockwise direction.





4. Remove underbody cover.





5. Disconnect the 4 fastening screws (M6 x 20) from the underside of the front spoiler.
6. Remove the sheetmetal brace under the radiator. To do this, loosen the 4 fastening screws.





7. Drain cooling system. Remove the drain plug from the radiator, drain the coolant into a container and dispose of it according to the applicable national laws if no longer required.
8. Fit a new drain plug on the radiator and tighten it.
9. Install the sheetmetal brace under the radiator. Tighten the 4 fastening screws to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).





10. Tighten the 4 fastening screws (M6 x 20) on the underside of the front spoiler.
11. Remove the right-hand headlight.
12. Remove engine compartment cover on the right.





13. Pull electric plug from coolant expansion tank.





14. Pull off the 3 coolant hoses shown.





15. Detach the torque support. To do this, unscrew the fastening screw on the torque support bracket and pull it out.





16. Detach the torque support on the body and swivel upwards.
17. Undo torque support bracket fastening screw from the body. One fastening screw is loosened through the headlight opening. The second screw is accessible from the top.

18. Remove body bracket. When doing this, unclip the electric cable (2 x).





19. Undo the coolant expansion tank fastening screw.





20. Pull coolant expansion tank towards engine and take out of the holder.

Installing coolant expansion tank





1. Insert coolant expansion tank into the holder and push in the direction of the wing.





2. Tighten the fastening screw (M6 x 10) to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).





3. Reinstall body bracket for the torque support. Clip on electric cable for coolant expansion tank 2 x.





4. Tighten fastening screw (M10 x 24) to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) through the headlight opening.





5. Tighten fastening screw (M10 x 35) to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) from the engine compartment.





6. Reinstall torque support. Install the fastening screw (M10 x 70) with a new fastening nut on the bracket. Tightening torque 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
7. Tighten torque support fastening screw on the body (M10 x 20) to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).





8. Mount and tighten the 3 coolant hoses.
9. Install engine compartment cover on the right side. To do this, tighten the 4 bayonet screws and the sheetmetal screw on the windshield washer reservoir.





10. Connect electric plug to expansion tank.
11. Fill and bleed the cooling circuit.





12. Screw on lid of expansion tank clockwise.
13. Close the maintenance cover.
14. Reinstall the complete engine guard.
15. Conduct a test drive with the vehicle, check the fluid level in the expansion tank after the coolant circuit has cooled again and, if necessary, fill up to the maximum marking with coolant.
