Installing Camshafts
Installing camshafts
Tools and materials
Caution: Never twist the crankshaft the direction of movement!
Proceed carefully while working as otherwise the engine can be damaged!
Ensure everything is clean when working on valve drive!
Only turn the engine on the crankshaft and never on the camshaft as the timing chain can jump over!
Please observe general warning notes and working regulations!
Installing camshafts
Note:
^ Ensure that the bearing covers are correctly positioned and allocated (see work step 4)!
^ Turn the crankshaft to about 30° in front of the TDC cylinder 1 so that the valves and pistons are not damaged when the camshaft bearing caps are being tightened!
1. Take fixing pin 9595/1 out of the bore in the crankshaft wheel. Using socket wrench insert 9714, turn the crankshaft until it is located 30° in front of TDC cylinder 1.
2. Apply a layer of engine oil to running surfaces of camshaft bearings and bearing covers.
Note: Place the camshafts in such a way that the cams are in the following position!
3. Place camshafts. When doing so, pay particular attention to the way the cams are positioned in relation to each other.
4. Put oiled bearing covers on the camshaft bearings. The matching number of the bearing covers must correspond to the camshaft housing. For each cylinder, the bearing covers are numbered consecutively from the front (at the side of the timing chain) -B- . The identification of the bearing cover and matching number can be read from the exhaust side -A- .
mug cover consecutive numbering inlet cylinder cover 1 etc. E/1
5. Tighten bearing cover screws M6 x 35 according to tightening sequence to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).
6. Position oil feed housing of inlet camshaft and tighten fastening screws M6 x 16 to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).
Note: If the camshaft wheels and camshaft adjusters are removed completely, the diamond washer end fastening screw must be replaced!
7. Replace the diamond washer and fastening screw which are located underneath the camshaft adjuster and camshaft wheel.
8. With both hands, carefully insert the camshaft adjuster and camshaft wheel into the timing chain. Screw in fastening screws of the wheels loosely to half a revolution
9. Push plastic guide onto both pins. If necessary, turn camshaft wheel back and forth a little with ring wrench so that the timing chain has more play between the wheels.
10. Set the timing.
11. Pull fixing pin out of the crankshaft belt pulley.
12. Install the camshaft housing cover on both cylinder banks.
