Removing and Installing Oil-Water Heat Exchanger

Removing and installing oil-water heat exchanger

Note:
^ The figures are from the Cayenne Turbo (M48150).
^ If a fault in the oil-water heat exchanger has caused oil and coolant to mix, the oil circuit should be checked to see if there is coolant in the engine or, if necessary, be cleaned.
^ If oil has entered the coolant circuit, this is to be cleaned after repair.

Removing oil-water heat exchanger

Caution: Danger of scalding!
^ Engine oil and components of the oil circuit can become very hot!
^ Prevent contact with the skin and eyes.
^ Wear suitable protective clothing.

Please observe applicable general warning notes and working regulations.

1. Position the vehicle at the take-up points provided on a lifting platform..
2. Open the bonnet.

Note:
^ The coolant filled in at the factory is intended for lifetime cooling and, thus, need not be changed. This coolant must not be mixed with other coolants.
^ Only original Porsche antifreeze should be used when changing or topping up the coolant.

3. Open maintenance cover.

Caution: Danger of scalding!
^ Coolant can be extremely hot and pressurized.
^ Only open the cooling system when it is cold.
^ Wear gloves.

4. Carefully open the cap on the coolant expansion tank. Unscrew the cap in counterclockwise direction.
5. Open cap on the expansion tank and remove.

6. Remove underbody cover.

7. Release the front spoiler on the underside.
8. Detach lock mount.

9. Remove the sheetmetal brace under the radiator. To do this, loosen the 4 fastening screws.

10. Drain cooling system. Remove the drain plug from the radiator, drain the coolant into a container and dispose of it according to the applicable national laws if no longer required.
11. Fit a new drain plug on the radiator and tighten it.

12. Release coolant lines from oil-water heat exchanger. To do this, release the two spring-band clamps and pull the lines upwards.

Caution: Danger of injury!
^ When pulling the heat exchanger off, even greater amounts of engine oil can leak out.
^ Wear suitable protective clothing.

13. Release the 4 fastening screws on the heat exchanger and pull the heat exchanger down and off. During this process, both engine oil and coolant will leak out. Collect leaking liquids and dispose of in accordance with legal requirements.

Installing oil/water heat exchanger
1. Replace the 2 sealing rings of the oil circuit. When doing this, pay attention to the lugs on the sealing ring. Subsequently, push the oil-water heat exchanger from underneath against the bracket and tighten the 4 fastening screws to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).

2. Push the coolant lines onto the connecting flanges and secure with the spring-band clamps.

3. Bleed and fill the coolant circuit. Subsequently, check to ensure that the coolant system is properly sealed up.

4. Screw on the cap of the expansion tank.
5. Close the maintenance cover.

6. Install underside panel.
7. Check the oil level.
